Wentworth is a leading civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering consultancy, providing design and checking services across all built environment sectors and industries. Established in 1999, we have a track record for our imagination, innovation, and high level of technical expertise, recognised as one of the leading temporary works and geotechnical design consultancies in the UK.
The Engineer supports the delivery of ground engineering design within a consultancy environment, with a particular focus on piling and deep foundation solutions. Working under the guidance of senior engineers and alongside contractors and project teams, the role involves contributing to safe, buildable, and efficient ground engineering designs, assisting in the management of geotechnical risks, and supporting projects through design development and construction interfaces.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist in the design of piling systems and deep foundations, including bored, CFA, and specialist piles, in accordance with Eurocodes, British Standards, and relevant industry guidance.
- Interpret ground investigation information and contribute to ground engineering assessments, including development of ground models and derivation of geotechnical parameters under supervision.
- Support the design of associated ground engineering elements such as working platforms (design input and verification), shallow foundations, and interfaces with earthworks.
- Prepare clear design calculations, sketches, and reports that set out assumptions, methodologies, and limitations aligned with ground conditions and construction methods.
- Work collaboratively with contractors and specialist subcontractors to ensure designs are practical, coordinated, and consider buildability risks.
- Assist with the review of contractor proposals, alternative foundation solutions, and value engineering options, contributing technical input as part of the wider design team.
- Deliver assigned ground engineering tasks in line with agreed scope, programme, and quality requirements.
- Identify geotechnical and construction risks and raise them appropriately within the project team, contributing to mitigation proposals.
- Support design checking and review activities, including carrying out self-checking and responding to comments from senior engineers.
- Contribute to team knowledge sharing and development, and actively engage in learning and professional development activities.
Requirements
- Degree (or higher) in Civil, Structural, or Geotechnical Engineering.
- Working toward chartership (CEng) with a relevant professional institution.
- Experience or a developing capability in ground engineering, with exposure to piling and deep foundation design.
- Good understanding of soil behaviour, basic soil–structure interaction concepts, and ground risk principles.
- Experience working within a consultancy or contractor-facing environment, with an appreciation of buildability and construction methods.
- Ability to work on technically challenging elements of projects with guidance and supervision.
- Clear communicator, able to explain design intent, assumptions, and technical issues to project team members.
