Wentworth Club is one of the world’s finest private members Golf and Country Clubs, famous for its outstanding three Championship golf courses, in addition to a luxury Tennis & Health Club. The Club is surrounded and entwined within the Wentworth Estate, one of the most prestigious private estates in the London suburbs where many of the world’s premier golfers have their home.

We are looking for an exceptional Director of Greenkeeping & Estate to lead our Greenkeeping Department and oversee our three fantastic 18‑hole courses (The West Course, The East Course, and The Edinburgh Course) including the Academy Par 3 Course, all practice facilities and surrounding lands. This role involves strategic planning, budget management, staff leadership, and ensuring golf courses meet high standards of presentation and playability.

Key Accountabilities
  • As a member of the Executive Team with a direct reporting line to the Executive Office provide strategic leadership to the Greenkeeping Department.
  • Developing and implement long‑term plans for course maintenance and sustainability.
  • Agronomic leadership – provide expert agronomic direction to maintain the golf courses at peak quality year‑round.
  • Monitor the performance of all daily maintenance operations, functions and services, ensuring the courses are maintained to the highest standards.
  • Obtain the best possible value for money on all materials purchased on behalf of the Club, by contacting suppliers and representatives of companies and negotiating prices.
  • Hold regular meetings with the Courses Manager and Deputy Course Managers to discuss work programmes and daily routines, e.g. machinery requirements, chemicals and all fine turf management needs.
  • Prepare long‑term work programmes for the club, winter plans, changes to tees and greens, hole layout, etc.
  • Prepare for any televised tournaments. Keep the preparation to as high a standard as possible before, during and after the tournaments.
  • Attend planning meetings with the European Tour on their tournament requirements, i.e. practice ground and tented village, etc.
  • Provide input, knowledge and experience into the business and Executive Team.
  • Provide members and guests with all the information on the day to make their visit worthwhile and commensurate with the Club’s 5‑star standards.
  • Be constantly aware of competition and market trends within the industry both in the UK and overseas.
  • Attend meetings with other Executive Team members to discuss key issues in the business.
  • Manage the environmental issues on the estate as required and liaise with the Surrey Wildlife Trust.
  • Seamlessly balance the need for visibility on the golf courses with the required administrative duties.
  • Oversee the financial performance of all areas detailed above, identifying any shortfalls in projected budget and take remedial action as required.
  • Compile departmental budgets and forecasts.
  • Investigate any deficiencies against budgets.
  • Ensure that payroll is accurately forecasted against business needs and budgets.
  • Ensure controls and procedures are introduced and followed to protect profit margins.
People Management
  • Ensure the structure and staffing levels for the Golf Courses meet business requirements and provide opportunities for staff development and succession planning.
  • Create a team environment which promotes good employee morale and ensures a high level of communication and pride in the department.
  • Ensure effective communication within the team by holding regular briefing sessions.
  • Strive achieving a motivated team and encourage maximum commitment and high levels of performance.
  • Assist with the recruitment of departmental team members in line with the Company Recruitment Policy.
  • Actively support and monitor the development of the team ensuring departmental training is recorded and ongoing for team members.
  • Carry out quality training and development of the team in a systematic and professional way in order to meet the needs of the business and assist in individual team members’ personal development.
  • Appraise and assess all employees under your control annually according to guidelines.
  • Comply with statutory and legal requirements for Fire, Health and Safety, and Employment.
  • Ensure that objectives are set and reviewed.
  • Ensure that training needs are adequately identified, development plans for staff kept updated and full use of training facilities are made.
  • Ensure that all new starters are effectively inducted into your department making use of the line trainers.
  • Set, maintain and review all standards in line with your department’s standard operating procedures.
Equipment and Facilities
  • Ensure all items of course plant and equipment are maintained to a high standard.
  • Prepare a replacement and investment programme for machinery to be considered annually by the Club.
  • Ensure that all aspects of the irrigation system are maintained to a high standard.
  • Ensure that the greenkeeping compound, starter’s building, on‑course toilets, shelters and all other course furniture are maintained to a high standard of repair and are appropriately secured.
