Starting salary £41,992 pro rata with progression to £45,089 pro rata through annual increments subject to satisfactory service (inclusive of outer fringe allowance).

21 hours per week (hybrid working). Permanent contract.

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic person to join its Landscape and Ecology team as Landscape Conservation Officer. With climate change and green spaces at the top of the Council’s priorities, this is an exciting time to join the team.

Reporting to the Landscape and Ecology Manager, you will be responsible for managing and implementing policies for our award-winning council-managed woodlands, nature reserves and other open spaces appropriate to their habitat type. You will be working closely with our woodland and conservation volunteers and will be the first point of contact for members of the public on wildlife conservation and countryside issues, and promoting public enjoyment of the natural open spaces in the borough.

What we’re looking for:

  • You will have a degree or appropriate qualification in environment or land management or have relevant experience at this level.
  • Experience of contract management and preparing work specifications.
  • Practical knowledge of a wide range of land management tasks such as fencing/gates, ditching, pond maintenance, woodland management/forestry.
  • Good working knowledge of conservation and the management of woodland and other habitats such as grasslands and ponds.
  • Good organisational skills and proven people skills.

As part of this role, you will be required to travel to sites across the borough, therefore the post holder will have a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle. The role is hybrid with the expectation of attending the office at least two days a week. The ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential in this post.
