Trainee Emergency Medical Technician (TEMT) - Pan Wales in Prestatyn

As this is no ordinary role, we will be looking for extraordinary people to join the Trust.

Following interview candidates will then be invited to a driving assessment, as part of the recruitment and selection process, to one of the following:

• St Asaph – 17th April and 24th April
• Cwmbran – 1st May and 2nd May
• Swansea – 9th May and 10th May

Successful candidates will then be aligned to one of our courses running between June 2026 and March 2027 in various locations across Wales.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is a professional who works in the specialised area of pre-hospital emergency care and is employed to respond to and deal with cases arising from 999 calls received from members of the public and doctor’s emergencies, urgent calls, inter-hospital transfers and other allocated details. The post-holder is required to comply fully with Trust operational arrangements and clinical guidelines and procedures, to respond promptly to instructions from Clinical Contact Centre (CCC) and senior staff, and to help provide an appropriate level of care and treatment to patients which is caring and within the post-holder’s level of training and competency. In addition, the post-holder is required to drive safely and be responsible for the proper use of a Trust ambulance or other vehicle, and will normally work with a Trust fully qualified Emergency Medical Technician or fully qualified Paramedic, but may work alone at times as the need arises. When working with a colleague who is less clinically qualified or less experienced, the post holder will be expected to provide appropriate guidance and instruction as necessary. Duties must be carried out in accordance with all relevant Trust operational and clinical policies, guidelines and procedures, with particular reference to those relating to clinical governance and clinical performance, and the Trust’s Code of Conduct and Standards of Professional Behaviour.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Full C1 Category on your driving licence is essential and the license must have no more than 3 penalty points and no previous convictions for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol in order to progress to the driving assessment. Candidates must have obtained this, at the point of submission of their application.

Qualifications and/or Knowledge

Essential criteria: Level 2 (L2) Diploma including Essential/Key/Core Skills at L2 in Application of Number and Communication; or Level 3 (L3) Ambulance Care Assistant qualification and standalone Essential/Key/Core Skills at L2 in Application of Numeracy and Communication; or 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including Mathematics/Numeracy, English/Welsh and combined Sciences or any single science; or Pearson BTEC L3 Ambulance Aid or IHCD Ambulance Aid (legacy). Current UK driving licence for Class C1/D1 with a maximum of 3 current endorsement points, and no convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Desirable criteria: Knowledge of geographical area served; Knowledge of working practices of Hospital A&E departments.

Essential criteria: Willing and able to work shifts.

Experience

Essential criteria: Experience of coping with difficult situations and dealing with people in sensitive, distressing, traumatic and potentially hostile & dangerous circumstances; Trust policies and procedures on Operational matters, clinical governance, and performance; Trust Code of Conduct and Standards of Professional Behaviour.

Skills and Attributes

Essential criteria: Good verbal and written communication skills, able to convey information well and complete all necessary documentation accurately and legibly; Ability to use electronic devices such as iPad, smart phone and Basic Digital Literacy Skills; Able to work well as a member of a team; Self-disciplined, able to work on own initiative with minimum supervision in line with their scope of practice; Good interpersonal skills, able to handle sensitive situations particularly in a professional, tactful and assertive manner where necessary; Logical thinking approach to problem solving; Able to work well under pressure, assimilate information quickly and make good decisions on diagnosis and treatment; Good physical coordination and manual dexterity particularly in difficult and cramped environments and where the patient’s condition is time critical, and speed and accuracy is essential.

Desirable criteria: Ability to speak Welsh - Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh.
