The Senior Indirect Tax Accountant will be responsible for supporting the business across all aspects of indirect tax reporting, compliance, governance and advisory work. The role will cover VAT, CIS, stamp duty and SDLT, while also providing practical indirect tax support to the Tax Transactions team on acquisitions, disposals, restructurings, financing and other corporate transactions. This is a hands‑on, 100% office‑based role suited to someone with strong technical indirect tax knowledge, excellent attention to detail and the ability to work closely with finance, legal, commercial and transactions teams.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Indirect tax compliance and reporting: Own or support the preparation, review and submission of indirect tax returns and related filings, including UK VAT returns, reconciliation to the general ledger, VAT compliance reviews and balance sheet reconciliations, CIS reporting, verification processes and monthly submissions, stamp duty and stamp duty land tax compliance support, option to tax records and related property VAT documentation, partial exemption, capital goods scheme and other specialist VAT calculations where applicable. Monitoring filing deadlines and ensuring timely, accurate submissions to HMRC and other relevant authorities.
  • VAT governance and controls: Maintain robust VAT and indirect tax processes, controls and documentation. Support the development of tax control frameworks and process improvements. Identify areas of VAT risk and recommend practical mitigation steps. Assist with internal reviews, audits and HMRC enquiries. Keep VAT process notes, compliance calendars and technical files up to date.
  • Advisory support to the business: Provide day‑to‑day VAT and indirect tax support to finance, accounts payable, accounts receivable, legal, commercial and operational teams. Review contracts, invoices and transaction flows from an indirect tax perspective. Advise on VAT treatment of property, construction, corporate and operational transactions. Support business teams with CIS queries, supplier assessments and construction‑related tax obligations. Provide guidance on stamp duty and SDLT matters, escalating complex issues where appropriate. Translate technical indirect tax rules into clear, practical advice for non‑tax stakeholders. Build strong working relationships with finance, legal, treasury, commercial, development and transactions teams. Act as a key point of contact for indirect tax queries across the business. Liaise with HMRC and external advisers as required. Support senior tax team members with ad‑hoc projects, governance initiatives and technical analysis.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience in VAT compliance and advisory work, ideally in a corporate, real estate, construction, infrastructure, financial services or professional services environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK VAT rules.
  • Familiarity with CIS compliance and reporting.
  • Exposure to stamp duty and SDLT matters, particularly in relation to property or corporate transactions.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing VAT returns and related reconciliations.
  • Ability to interpret tax legislation and guidance and apply it to practical scenarios.
  • Strong Excel skills and confidence working with reconciliations, data analysis and reporting.
  • Experience supporting transactions, including acquisitions, disposals or restructurings preferred.
  • Real estate or property VAT experience, including options to tax, TOGCs, leases, developments or capital goods scheme matters preferred.
  • Experience dealing with HMRC enquiries or tax audits preferred.
  • Knowledge of Making Tax Digital requirements preferred.
  • Experience working with external advisers and managing advisory input preferred.
  • One or more of the following preferred: ATT, CTA, ACA, ACCA or equivalent tax/accounting qualification.
