About the Role

Wellington School is seeking a motivated and reliable Apprentice Gardens Operative to join our Grounds and Gardening team from August 2025. This is an exciting opportunity to kick-start a career in horticulture while gaining hands-on experience across a wide range of practical gardening and groundskeeping tasks.

Working under the guidance of the Head Groundsman and alongside a small, dedicated team, you’ll help to maintain and enhance the school’s beautiful grounds and gardens all year round. From planting and pruning to mowing and machinery maintenance, this varied and rewarding role will give you the skills and experience to thrive in the horticulture industry.

Key Responsibilities
  • General gardening duties including grass cutting, hedge trimming, weeding, and border care
  • Planting and caring for flower beds, shrubberies, and seedlings
  • Supporting small landscaping projects across the school campus
  • Using and maintaining a variety of equipment (mowers, strimmers, tractors, etc.)
  • Carrying out routine litter picking, leaf clearing, and snow clearance
  • Following strict health and safety procedures and wearing appropriate PPE
  • Interacting politely with staff, students, and visitors to support a safe, welcoming environment
  • Participating in all aspects of the Level 2 Horticulture and Landscape Operative Apprenticeship, including day-release study and training through Bridgwater & Taunton College
What We’re Looking For

We welcome applicants who are eager to begin their career in gardening and grounds maintenance. No prior experience is needed - just a willingness to learn and work hard in all weather conditions.

You will need:

  • GCSE Maths and English at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent)
  • A genuine interest in horticulture and outdoor work
  • Enthusiasm for learning and developing practical skills
  • A good level of physical fitness and willingness to work in all seasons
  • Strong attention to detail and a pride in delivering high standards
  • A positive, proactive approach and the ability to work well both independently and in a team
  • Clear communication skills and a professional, friendly manner

If you already have some horticulture knowledge or experience, your training programme can be tailored to reflect this.

Hours & Benefits
  • Full-time, year-round role (40 hours per week: Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm)
  • Weekend working required on a rota basis during term time
  • One day per week allocated for training/study
  • 25 days’ holiday per year + 8 bank holidays (to be taken during school holidays)
