Job Description
About Us
Wellington Management offers comprehensive investment management capabilities that span nearly all segments of the global capital markets. Our investment solutions, tailored to the unique return and risk objectives of institutional clients in more than 60 countries, draw on a robust body of proprietary research and a collaborative culture that encourages independent thought and healthy debate. As a private partnership, we believe our ownership structure fosters a long-term view that aligns our perspectives with those of our clients.
About the Role
POSITION
We are seeking to recruit a Research Associate in London to join one of our established Equity Portfolio Management teams. The team manages pan-European assets, and focuses on identifying companies which demonstrate a structural growth in their business driven by a secular trend, superior business model and/or technology, enjoy an identifiable competitive advantage and a valuation that underestimates its potential growth. This individual will focus on analysing stocks across countries and industries, and will be responsible for in-depth company and industry analysis as part of a highly collaborative team. Coverage will depend somewhat on the prior experience of the successful candidate.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Key responsibilities will include the following:
* Independently conduct proprietary research based on data gathered from company filings, host company management meetings, and utilize additional independent research sources to build conviction;
* Develop unique research insights to arrive at well supported investment conclusions for inclusion in various client investment strategies;
* Generate successful long and short investment ideas, and provide constant monitoring of existing positions;
* Cover multiple industries, and analyse stocks across the full market cap spectrum;
* Build multi-year financial models to determine appropriate valuations under various scenarios;
* Work as part of a small, highly collaborative team, sharing ideas and offering feedback.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
The following skills are required for the role:
Investment acumen and passion – the Research Associate will have a passion for, and understanding of, the European and broader equity markets, combined with a well-articulated process for researching and evaluating companies. The ability to identify mispricing and valuation discrepancies, make investment recommendations, and communicate their findings to the Portfolio Manager is required. The ideal candidate will be curious and passionate about markets, with an ability to work independently, and to undertake company and industry research with the objective of generating successful investment ideas for client portfolios. In addition, they must exhibit a fundamental, research oriented, bottom-up approach, and be able to consistently implement ideas through an analytical framework.
Strong collaboration and influencing skills – the successful candidate will be energised by being an individual contributor within a collaborative team, and will embrace the benefits of overlapping lines of company coverage and idea generation across the firm. The Research Associate will build strong trusting relationships internally with colleagues, and externally with company management teams. The ability to take risk and challenge investment views is critical, as is the humility to admit mistakes, a desire to learn from others, and recognition of the benefits of diverse perspectives. The ability to communicate (both verbally and in writing) action-oriented opinions clearly and with conviction, and to contribute to an open investment dialogue, is important.
Team building and integrity – the ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record of effective teamwork. A strong work ethic and curious mindset will be greatly valued.
Growth mindset – the flexibility and openness to continue learning, evolving and growing as an investor is required. The Research Associate will bring a broad perspective and flexible investment mindset, allowing them to identify value creation opportunities across the full market cap spectrum of listed European companies.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Additional qualifications and characteristics are likely to include:
* Strong academic credentials. A professional qualification (e.g. CFA), or progress towards one, is preferred;
* 2-5 years of relevant financial analysis experience, gained within Buy or Sell side equity or credit research, Private Equity or Private Debt, with a commensurate level of understanding of company financial statements;
* Self-awareness, self-confidence, and the humility to admit and learn from 'being wrong';
* The highest level of integrity, ethical standards, and intellectual honesty;
