We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

Overview

We are looking for a Senior Research Manager to join our team.

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

You will be working within the Impacts and Adaptation team within the Climate and Health Solutions area, reporting to the Head of Climate Impacts and Adaptation.

Wellcome’s Climate and Health programme seeks to significantly increase our understanding of the effects of climate change on human health and identify the interventions and policies that can respond to the climate crisis in a way that protects and improves human health. To achieve this, we support uptake and impact through goal-driven engagement with a wide range of stakeholders including public, private, and community organisations across health-impacting sectors.

Role and responsibilities

What will I be doing?

As a Senior Research Manager in the Climate & Health team, you will play a key role in putting health at the centre of climate action. Working within the Climate Impacts and Adaptation sub-team, you will help build a strong evidence base on how climate change affects health and identify adaptation actions that can protect communities worldwide.

You will manage a portfolio of research activities designed to generate actionable insights and ensure these findings inform policy and practice. Your work will span individual project delivery, strategic portfolio planning, and building partnerships that connect science with real-world impact.

Key accountabilities:

  • Shape and manage a coherent, impact-driven portfolio of research activities focused on climate impacts and adaptation in health.
  • Oversee the delivery of individual projects, ensuring they remain on track, within scope, and aligned to strategic objectives.
  • Lead on wider portfolio-level planning, including budgeting and resource allocation, to maximise efficiency and impact.
  • Collaborate with internal colleagues and external partners to ensure projects generate knowledge that directly informs policy and practice.
  • Support the growth of a diverse, transdisciplinary climate and health ecosystem by fostering connections across research, innovation, and decision-making communities.
  • Communicate complex research findings clearly to varied audiences, ensuring Wellcome is a trusted and influential voice in climate and health.
  • Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.

Is this role for me?

We’re looking for someone who is motivated by the opportunity to connect research with real-world impact. As a Senior Research Manager in Climate & Health, you will help shape an ambitious programme that brings together science, policy, and practice to protect health in the face of climate change. This role is ideal if you want to deepen your expertise in global health and climate action, while developing leadership experience in managing research portfolios that influence decision-making at scale.
