The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.

We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

We are looking for a Communications Manager to help drive communications to our core Mental Health research stakeholders. You will be a key part of a dedicated team responsible for managing Wellcome’s reputation with these audiences.

As Communications Manager – Mental Health, you will be a key member of a wider matrix team of communications specialists within Corporate Affairs. You will spend a significant amount of your time working directly with Wellcome’s busy and ambitious mental health solutions team for around 50 people, who are driven by the vision of a world where no one is held back by mental health problems.

What will I be doing?

You will assist the Head of Communications – Mental Health in the implementation delivery of a communications and engagement strategy that amplifies the work of the Mental Health team and supports their mission to create a step-change in early interventions for mental health problems.

You will play a lead role on mental health communications work led by the Corporate Affairs team, in collaboration with the mental health team, ensuring that all outputs are delivered and communicated to the highest possible quality, with consistent messaging and demonstrable impact.

As a Communication Manager – Mental Health, you will:

  • Plan, create and deliver multi-channel communications plans aimed at Wellcome’s research community to build understanding and support of Wellcome’s vision and mission.
  • Advise colleagues on the best communications approaches and tactics to meet their objectives.
  • Develop a detailed understanding of the stories, priorities, and challenges of researchers, especially current and potential Wellcome grant-holders.
  • Write timely and engaging content with an audience-first approach, including newsletter copy, funding scheme pages, talking points and comment pieces.
  • Focus on continuous improvement and expanding our audience base, using audience insight and analysis to improve the effectiveness of our communications to research stakeholders.
  • Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.

Is this job for me?

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience of working in a communications team delivering multi-channel communications to external audiences, preferably within a scientific, medical, or research-oriented organisation.
  • Possesses excellent written skills including writing clear and compelling copy relating to strategy, business process and research.
  • Has well-developed presentation skills, including the ability to create engaging and visually appealing PowerPoint decks.
  • Exhibits excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to persuade and influence a diverse set of stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.
