Reporting Line: The Trainee Engineer will report directly to the Project Manager.
Role: The role of Trainee Engineer, participating in the Engineering Graduate Apprenticeship will develop knowledge and understanding across all areas of Well Engineering. The role will involve supporting the Engineering team to coordinate related well decommissioning scopes and studies to deliver effective and integrated engineering solutions in support of the WSS well abandonment programme project life cycle. Providing assurance support to the Engineering team ensuring well decommissioning projects are being prepared, defined and executed in accordance with WSS and industry standards. On successful conclusion of the 4‑year apprenticeship the Trainee Engineer will possess a BEng (Hons) in Engineering: Design & Manufacture.
Key responsibilities:
- Support the Well Abandonment Engineers in understanding, managing, and achieving expectations for well decommissioning projects as well as gaining an understanding of the full well life cycle.
- Understand and interpret well details including schematics and operational reports.
- Provide the Well Abandonment Engineers with support in summarising well construction information.
- Support the effective planning of Well Decommissioning activities.
- Take care of own health and safety and that of others in the workplace.
- Attend service company presentations where possible to develop understanding of service company techniques and services.
- Interact with internal and external stakeholders to deliver specific scopes of work.
- Maximise learning opportunities such as rig visits, lunch & learns visits to 3rd party facilities as well as capitalising on the learning from experienced colleagues through questioning and observation.
Key outcomes:
- Good understanding of the fundamental concepts of Well Decommissioning, including Well Decommissioning assets, well construction, and reservoir isolation requirements.
- Development of the individual’s knowledge and understanding of the full well life cycle and well decommissioning projects.
- Achieve BEng (Hons) Engineering; Design and Manufacture.

Knowledge & Competency:
- 4 SQA Highers all at grade B or above, to include Maths and either Engineering Science, Physics or Technological Studies.
- English at National 5 grade C or above is required if not held at higher.

- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Proactive and inquisitive, seeking and embracing opportunities to learn and take on new experiences.
