About the department

Our new Ophthalmology Centre is a flagship development within the Welbeck network, purpose built to set a new benchmark for specialist day‑case eye care. It brings together state of the art technology, beautifully designed clinical spaces, and a calm, modern environment that supports exceptional care and exceptional teamwork. As part of the founding team, you will help shape the culture, embed best practice, and play a meaningful role in creating a centre that patients trust and colleagues are proud to be part of.

About the role

We are looking for a compassionate and proactive Healthcare Assistant to support safe, seamless patient care within our new Ophthalmology Centre. Working alongside registered practitioners, you will play a key role in delivering a calm, high quality experience across outpatient, diagnostic, peri‑operative and recovery settings. You will support patient admissions, prepare patients for procedures, assist with postoperative care, and carry out clinical observations. You will also contribute to ophthalmic diagnostics by performing non‑invasive imaging tests such as visual acuity, IOP measurement, visual fields and OCT (where trained and authorised). This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in a patient‑facing clinical environment and is keen to develop skills within a modern, specialist day‑case service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with the clinical team to provide a safe, effective and supportive care environment for patients, relatives and carers.
  • Carry out delegated clinical duties including observations, record keeping, specimen handling and peri‑operative support.
  • Perform ophthalmic diagnostic tests including visual acuity, IOP, visual fields, fundus imaging, OCT and anterior segment imaging (where trained and competent).
  • Assist in equipment preparation, stock maintenance, routine safety checks and theatre set‑up.
  • Provide compassionate patient support including chaperoning, assistance with mobility, and helping patients navigate their clinical journey.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control procedures, contribute to a strong safety culture, and maintain accurate and confidential clinical documentation.

About you

You will be someone who thrives in a patient‑centred clinical environment and takes pride in delivering safe, calm and supportive care. You enjoy working within a multidisciplinary team and bring a proactive, thoughtful approach to the patient experience. You will be someone who:

  • Has at least 1 year’s experience in a healthcare setting and holds current BLS certification.
  • Brings experience in ophthalmic care or a strong interest in developing within this specialty.
  • Communicates clearly, kindly and professionally with patients and colleagues.
  • Is organised, dependable, and able to work both autonomously and as part of a wider clinical team.
  • Is committed to excellent standards of care, safety, equality and continuous improvement.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

At Welbeck, we believe exceptional care starts with inclusive teams. We are committed to creating a workplace where difference is valued and excellence is expected; where people feel respected, and everyone is supported to do their very best. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and experiences and appoint on merit, recognising that diverse perspectives strengthen clinical quality, leadership, operational delivery and patient care.
