About your new role
We are looking to recruit a Principal Associate to join the Specialty team in London, with a particular focus on complex insurance coverage, defence and reinsurance matters. The successful candidate will support the continued growth of the team and work closely with Partners and senior lawyers on a broad range of high-value and strategically important disputes. Our Specialty team acts for major London Market insurers, global Insurers and reinsurers, UK composite insurers and managing agencies across a broad range of complex and high-value claims. The team advises on technically challenging coverage disputes, defence claims and reinsurance matters across a range of sectors and policy types. The role will involve advising on complex policy coverage issues, monitoring and defending underlying claims, supporting reinsurers and insurers on strategic disputes, and assisting with advisory and contentious reinsurance matters. A large part of the caseload is international in nature and involves losses/claims in foreign jurisdiction and dealing with foreign local counsel. The successful candidate will also be expected to play an active role in client relationship management, business development and supporting the development of junior team members.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Proactive management of a varied caseload with limited supervision, including complex coverage, defence and reinsurance matters
- Advising insurers and reinsurers in relation to policy coverage, indemnity and liability issues
- Supporting clients in relation to reinsurance disputes, recoveries and strategic advisory work
- Monitoring and defending underlying claims on behalf of reinsurers, and insurers including working with local counsel in other jurisdictions
- Preparing detailed and technical reports, correspondence, pleadings and other legal documents
- Advising clients on policy interpretation and wording issues
- Liaising with insurer and reinsurer clients, brokers, insureds, experts, witnesses, counsel and other stakeholders
- Ensuring compliance with client service level agreements, relevant policies and procedures
- Supporting and contributing to business development initiatives, including networking, training and thought leadership
- Assisting with client pitches, profile raising and development of key client relationships
- Producing management information and reporting as required
- Delegating to, supervising and developing junior team members
- Assisting Partners and senior lawyers with strategic and high-value matters as required achieving financial, utilisation and chargeable hour targets
- Ensuring case management records are maintained accurately and consistently
- Working in accordance with Weightmans’ values and wider business objectives
About You
You will be a qualified solicitor with at least 6 years’ PQE (or equivalent experience) and will have strong experience in insurance litigation, policy coverage and defence work. Experience of reinsurance disputes and advisory work is essential. It would be useful if you have experience of dealing with international work and working with foreign local counsel. You will have previous experience and a genuine and demonstrable interest in the above area of work. We also require you to have/be:
- Strong experience advising insurers and reinsurers on complex coverage and defence matters
- Experience handling or supporting reinsurance disputes and strategic advisory work
- Strong understanding of the London Market and the relationship between insurers, reinsurers, brokers and lawyers
- Experience of complex commercial insurance policies and policy interpretation
- Excellent legal analysis, drafting and technical skills
- Strong commercial awareness and a client-focused approach
- The ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively under pressure
- Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills
- A proactive and collaborative approach to team working
- Experience supervising and developing junior lawyers
- A passion for business development, client relationship management and profile raising
- Excellent IT skills and attention to detail
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a wider team
