The Role

As Head of Technology, you will set and lead the end-to-end technology strategy for a complex, high-growth marketplace platform. Reporting into the Operations Director, this role carries a clear mandate to modernise, strengthen and scale the technology function — spanning architecture, delivery, operating model, performance and talent.

You will be accountable for ensuring the platform is secure, scalable, reliable and commercially effective as the business accelerates towards £1bn+ GMV, while also leading a reset of how technology teams operate, perform and deliver.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Owning the long-term technology strategy, architectural direction and engineering standards
  • Designing and executing a roadmap towards globally scalable, resilient architecture
  • Leading the transformation of the technology operating model, structure and delivery cadence
  • Driving measurable improvements in engineering quality, predictability, velocity and output
  • Ensuring technology decisions directly support commercial outcomes such as GMV, conversion, margin and cost-to-serve
  • Building strong cross-functional partnerships across Product, Commercial, Operations, Finance, HR and Risk
  • Taking full ownership of technology budgets, cloud spend, tooling and vendor optimisation
  • Establishing robust governance across delivery, prioritisation, performance management and escalation
  • Owning cyber security, platform resilience, risk management and regulatory compliance across multiple regions
  • Developing and leading senior technology leaders across engineering, architecture, SRE, QA and design

The Person

This role requires a senior, credible technology leader with experience operating in high-scale, consumer-facing digital environments — ideally marketplaces, ecommerce platforms or similarly complex ecosystems.

You will bring:

  • Proven experience leading and transforming technology organisations through periods of rapid scale and maturity
  • Strong background in modern architecture and systems design within multi-region, high-availability platforms
  • A track record of improving engineering discipline, delivery reliability and organisational performance
  • Commercial acumen, with the ability to align technology investment to tangible business outcomes
  • Experience owning technology budgets, cloud cost optimisation and vendor strategy
  • Deep understanding of security, reliability, risk and compliance in regulated, consumer-data-rich environments
  • A leadership style characterised by clarity, accountability, pace and high standards
  • The ability to coach senior leaders, address underperformance decisively and build high-trust, high-output teams
  • Comfort operating hands-on when required, with a strong bias for execution and visible progress
