Landscape Observatory is looking for two skilled and motivated people to join our growing team on a 12 month basis (with the possibility of further funding being secured). This is an excellent opportunity for GIS trained graduates with a background in Geography or Ecology who are eager to build a long-term career in GIS as applied to landscape scale conservation management. You will play a key part in a ground breaking project to train AI to produce accurate land cover maps for ecosystem modelling of Protected Landscapes covering 25% of England.
In the role, you will be part of the Landscape Observatory team, based in the Peak District National Park, responsible for the preparation and digitisation of aerial imagery for AI training, validation of digital maps and datasets for protected landscapes, feature mapping, helping to develop ecosystem and climate change impact modelling, research, and a range of monitoring campaigns.
If successful, you will spend the first 6 – 8 weeks full-time working in our Bakewell Office with an option to take advantage of blended working (from home or other suitable base) up to 2 days per week after the initial period.
About You
You will need to be able to digitise habitats and landscape features accurately, and verify third party data layers with a high degree of accuracy from aerial photography of landcover based on our new schema. Working collaboratively with other team members, you will help set and maintain standards of working with spatial data, including training and support, and resolving technical issues.

Landscape Observatory is a bold new project from the Protected Landscapes Partnership, serving 43 protected landscapes covering around 25% of England and England’s national trails. It provides a platform for advancing the latest critical thinking in conservation management.

Landscape Observatory is hosted by the Peak District National Park. The Peak District National Park was the first of Britain’s 15 national parks and is still enjoyed by millions, looking for both adventure and a breathing space to escape. It is also the most accessible due to its proximity to four major cities of the UK and its 38,000 residents. We recognise the importance of our national park, and our job is to speak up and care for the Peak District National Park for all to enjoy forever.
