We are in the process of building and rolling out our next generation, dynamic, scalable, and resilient fulfilment platform for Tesco, to address both manual and robotic powered automated fulfilment operations across all customer order fulfilment locations. This highly optimised and continuously improving fulfilment platform is designed to be used to fulfil all product categories – Grocery / GM and Fashion, of Customer Orders.
Ours is a globally distributed, full stack Java tech team and our building blocks consist of a set of microservice components, backend APIs, Rich UI, robust eventing platform and data layer components utilising a wide range of modern technologies including:
- Java, RxJava, SpringBoot
- Kafka, PostgreSQL and Couchbase
- Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Splunk, New Relic
- Azure Cloud
We are responsible for the software throughout the lifecycle. We follow a strong DevOps culture, owning services end‑to‑end from development through to production support.
We are looking for a Backend Engineer (SDE2) with strong experience in building scalable, distributed Java systems. This is a mid‑level individual contributor role where you'll work on meaningful backend features, support others, and develop your technical leadership skills.
As a key member of our engineering team, you will develop robust, scalable and efficient backend services to optimise fulfilment operations and drive operational success.
Responsibilities- Backend Development – Build scalable, resilient Java‑based backend services, APIs, and micro‑services to support fulfilment workflows and systems.
- Feature Delivery – Implement and ship end‑to‑end stories, primarily focused on frontend with some backend integration.
- Technical Contribution – Take ownership of medium‑sized features and participate in their design and delivery.
- Collaboration – Work closely with engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to understand problems and propose solutions.
- Code Quality – Write clean, maintainable code and contribute to peer reviews to raise the team's quality bar.
- Support & Mentorship – Help onboard junior engineers and share knowledge across the team.
- Continuous Improvement – Apply best practices and contribute to improving development processes and standards.
- Previous experience of having done product development using agile methodologies.
- Hands‑on experience building and supporting reliable and operationally robust distributed Java applications / products.
- Any previous experience contributing to a globally distributed software engineering team is a big plus.
- Back‑end – Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, PostgreSQL, Couchbase, RESTful APIs.
- DevOps – CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions), Docker, Kubernetes.
- Cloud – Azure.
- Practices – TDD, clean code, automation, performance optimisation.
