Electronics Engineer Location: Reading – Hybrid Working

Are you looking for a new challenge? Would you like an opportunity to develop your electronics skills in a close‑knit, dynamic team environment? Thales OME designs a range of state‑of‑the‑art solutions for some of the most technically advanced defence and security platforms in the world, and we’re seeking talented engineers who can apply their knowledge and skills in an electronics role. This role is a development role, intended to give an engineer with some existing design experience the opportunity to build their technical skills, widen their exposure to different aspects of the design lifecycle, and learn about complex defence products in more detail.

The role will cover all aspects of the product lifecycle, from concept studies, requirements, selection of technology, design and development, integration, validation and qualification. There are positions available based at our sites in Glasgow and in Reading. While some of the role may be carried out from home, some attendance on site will be necessary for lab testing, system integration and some aspects of collaborative work.

At Thales we offer flexible smart working and a competitive benefits package including a healthcare plan, employee assistance programme, matched pension contributions, generous annual leave and additional flexible benefits.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Undertake design of electronic circuit assemblies, from concept through design, test and system integration
  • Engage with a multi‑disciplinary team across the project (systems, mechanical, software, safety, etc) to develop an optimum solution
  • Work collaboratively with the project team to ensure products meet all requirements
  • Contribute to the development of the wider electronics team, including proposing and implementing improvements, participating in peer reviews and sharing knowledge and good practice across the team
  • Generate design documentation such as specifications, test plans and design records
  • Prepare for and participate in peer reviews and project design reviews
  • Report progress of work against cost, schedule and performance

About you:

We are looking for an innovative and forward thinking individual with the following skills, experience and attributes:

  • Experience of electronic/electrical design in a real‑world environment (circuit simulation, block diagrams, drawing schematics, etc)
  • Use of schematic capture packages (Cadence, Mentor Graphics or similar)
  • Practical experience of lab work (eg. soldering, circuit testing, cable assembly, debug, etc)
  • Some experience testing at circuit board and system level (eg. board bring‑up and debug, EMC testing)
  • General understanding of engineering process and design lifecycles
  • Personal organisational and time‑management skills

Core Benefits:

On offer is a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes:

  • Performance‑related bonus
  • Half day every Friday, usually finishing around 13:00
  • 28 days annual leave (plus bank holidays) plus opportunity to buy up to 40 hours/year (pro rata)
  • 24 hours volunteering paid for
  • Private healthcare (grade dependent)
  • Pension scheme
  • Life cover
  • 24/7 Employee Assistance Program and access to mental wellbeing app
  • Employee discount shopping schemes on major brands and retailers
  • Gym membership discounts

Security Clearance Requirement: Due to the nature of the work that we do at Thales, many of our roles are subject to security restrictions. This role requires Security Clearance (SC). It would be advantageous if currently held, however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance prior to commencing employment. To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years. In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years’ residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.

At Thales, we ensure equal opportunities, pay and working conditions for all. The benefits we offer include private medical insurance, buying or selling annual leave, cycle to work schemes, employee discounts, paid volunteering day, stocks and shares, annual bonus and much more depending on the role. We are committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels valued for who they are and the unique strengths they bring.
