We are seeking an experienced and motivated Environmental Health professional to lead our Environmental Protection service. This is an opportunity to combine technical expertise with visible leadership, shaping a responsive service that protects residents, supports communities and contributes to the Council’s wider priorities.
You will provide technical and professional leadership across a broad Environmental Protection portfolio, including statutory nuisance, air quality, environmental permitting, contaminated land and related work. You will oversee complex casework and robust enforcement decisions, develop service policies and procedures, and lead the delivery of key projects and statutory responsibilities.
You will lead and develop a multidisciplinary team, setting clear expectations and supporting colleagues to deliver a professional, accountable and high-performing service. You will shape service delivery, strengthen performance management and embed continuous improvement across Environmental Health.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and manage the Council’s Environmental Protection service, ensuring effective statutory enforcement, high standards of customer care and timely service delivery.
- Provide expert advice on statutory nuisance, air quality, environmental permitting, contaminated land and other complex Environmental Protection matters.
- Manage, motivate and develop team members, prioritising workloads and fostering a positive, accountable and high-performing team culture.
- Develop, review and implement strategies, policies, procedures and guidance to support consistent, legally robust service delivery.
- Represent the Council at meetings, committees, negotiations and multi-agency forums, providing clear reports and professional advice.
- Support budget management, procurement, performance monitoring, reporting and continuous service improvement.
We are looking for someone with:
- A Diploma or Degree in Environmental Health and registration with the CIEH Professional Register or EHRB.
- Significant senior-level experience in Environmental Health, with strong practical knowledge of Environmental Protection functions, statutory enforcement and air quality.
- Experience supervising staff, ideally within a local government or regulatory environment.
- Excellent communication, negotiation and report-writing skills, with the ability to explain complex legal and technical issues clearly to a range of audiences.
- A valid driving licence and access to suitable transport for work duties, together with the flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends and respond to emergency incidents when required.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent customer care, strong organisational skills and the confidence to deal with challenging situations calmly and professionally.
