As the business continues to expand, we are seeking a Payroll Assistant to join the friendly and collaborative Finance team at the business' HQ near Reading. This role offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced payroll professional to play a key part in ensuring our employees are paid accurately and on time, while supporting the continued growth of our organisation.
The Role
Reporting to the Payroll Manager, the Payroll Assistant will assist with the accurate and timely processing of monthly payrolls for a large, multi-site workforce. You will be responsible for maintaining employee records, processing starters and leavers, managing changes to employee details, and resolving payroll queries promptly and professionally. This is a busy and rewarding role, offering exposure to all aspects of payroll administration within a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the preparation and processing of multiple monthly payrolls for employees across a range of locations and business units.
- Maintain accurate employee records, ensuring all new starters, leavers, and contractual changes are updated in the payroll system in a timely manner.
- Support the Payroll Manager in meeting all internal and statutory payroll deadlines.
- Collaborate with HR, Finance, and operational managers to ensure payroll data is complete, accurate, and submitted on schedule.
- Reconcile payroll reports, check calculations, and investigate discrepancies or anomalies.
- Respond to payroll-related queries from employees and managers in a professional, timely, and customer-focused manner.
- Ensure compliance with payroll legislation, company policies, and data protection requirements.
- Support the ongoing development and improvement of payroll processes and systems.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Proven experience in end-to-end payroll processing within a high-volume or multi-site organisation.
- Strong working knowledge of Sage 50 Payroll (or equivalent payroll software) is essential.
- Excellent understanding of PAYE, National Insurance, statutory payments (SSP, SMP, SPP), pensions, and other payroll regulations.
- Highly organised with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple deadlines effectively.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills, with the confidence to identify and resolve payroll discrepancies.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills — able to build positive relationships across departments and with external stakeholders.
