We Build Recruitment are now looking to hire a Design Engineer on behalf of our client, a Bristol based high voltage grid connection specialist. The Design Engineer will be working on electrical projects on behalf of the Company and will be involved with projects ranging from LV through to 132kV. It will involve working as part of a team to review Distribution Network Operator (DNO) Contestable Connection Offers and compiling contestable and private designs for grid connections ranging from LV up to and including 132kV. They will also be required to assist in the conceptual design of various types of energy projects, principally Solar Farms and Battery Energy Storage.
Main responsibilities
- Working as part of a team.
- Working on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Minimising M&E construction expenditure within the business wherever possible.
- Maintain and develop competence level and technical skills to ensure delivery to high standards.
- Maintain awareness of internal Health & Safety policy and company policies and keep up to date on changes that impact your role.
- Adhere to the Safety Rules of the business and its customers.
- Be aware of, understand and implement the companies Policies and Procedures in respect to Health, Safety, Quality and Environment.

Design
- The technical review of projects and DNO and National grid connection offers.
- The design and Conceptual design of both the grid connection and private network infrastructure from LV up to and including 132kV.
- Overseeing the production of:
- Main Connection and protection single line diagram design review
- Cable route designs review
- Switchgear selection and specification
- Transformer selection and specification
- CT and VT sizing studies
- Battery Charger sizing studies
- Multicore schedule, Multicore termination schedules
- Cable sizing studies
- Small Power and Lighting Design
- Substation Layout Design
Operations
- Attend Site visits if required with construction team to ensure smooth design delivery.
- Support the operations team with site level queries that impact design.
- Arrange Design review meeting with the operation team to ensure they have had input to ensure practical buildability of the designs.
- Support the project delivery by assisting in regular POW updates with the relevant Project Managers.
- Ensure Construction designs are produced to support site activities and mobilisation dates.
Commercial
- Support procurement activities to ensure the correct specification of equipment is chosen.
- Ensure contract milestones are met through the Design process.
Person specification
Essential criteria:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering.
- AutoCAD experience.
- 3 years + Experience in a Contracting/Consulting.
- Sound numeracy skills.
- IT systems experience and competency.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
- Full UK driving licence.
- Project Management Experience.
- HV/EHV experience.
- Experience working with IDNO’s, DNO’s or ICP’s.
- Working to BSEN, IEC, IEEE & CENELEC Standards.
- Managing Drawing register and design submissions to the DNO/Client.
- Advanced MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project Programming Software).
- Excellent attention to detail with an eye for accuracy.
Desirable criteria:
- Google Earth experience.
- Power system modelling.
- Master’s degree (Power).
- Ability to create a design delivery programme.
- CEng.
- Previous experience using Procore Document Management tools.
