Stop Managing One Plant - Start Shaping an Industry! Most AD Engineers spend their careers managing one or two sites. This role is different. You will use your "boots-on-the-ground" experience to help our 400+ members optimise their operations, navigate complex regulations, and raise the standards of the entire global biogas sector.
Role Purpose
The Technical Support Manager (TSM) is a front-facing, delivery-focused role. You are the trusted technical voice for the UK AD operating community (ADBA) while supporting selective international engagement (WBA). You will translate complex regulatory "headaches" into practical, site-level guidance that improves performance and industry confidence.
Important Note: This role requires several years of hands-on, direct operational responsibility on an AD plant. It is not suitable for graduates, early-career engineers, or candidates whose experience is primarily advisory, academic, or sales-focused.
What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)
- Member Technical Support & Enquiry Management
- Primary Contact: Act as the first point of call and trusted technical contact for our operator and supply chain members - responding to and resolving their technical and regulatory enquiries.
- Operational Guidance: Provide clear, credible advice on plant operations, permitting, health & safety, and biosecurity.
- Site Engagement: Use site visits and Regional Operators Meetings (ROMs) to build member loyalty and identify/share emerging industry trends.
- Best Practice & Regulatory Leadership
- Knowledge Development: Create and maintain the "Best Practice Guidance" for both ADBA and WBA.
- Regulatory Translation: Monitor updates from the EA, HSE, and APHA, and translate them into accessible, usable guidance for plant managers.
- Delivering the Anaerobic Digestion Certification Scheme (ADCS)
- Quality Assurance: Coordinate the delivery of the ADCS, guiding operators through the accreditation process.
- Strategic Influence: Actively pursue opportunities to make the ADCS an obligatory industry standard to de-risk investments.
- Training & Events
- Technical Delivery: Design and lead technical training programmes, webinars, and approximately 8 Regional Operators Meetings per year.
- Industry Voice: Represent the associations at external working groups, providing technical evidence to support policy and lobbying activity.
Backgrounds & Skills We Welcome
- Operational Scars: Several years’ hands-on experience operating AD plants; you know what happens when the biology crashes or the technology fails.
- Regulatory Literacy: Strong working knowledge of UK AD regulation and compliance (Environmental Permitting, Health & Safety).
- Communication: The ability to explain complex engineering or biological issues to both site staff and high-level stakeholders.
- Solutions-Focused: A proactive approach to solving "live" industry challenges.
- Experience with plant design, commissioning, or build-phases.
- Familiarity with audit schemes or management systems (ISO, ADCS, etc.).
- A background in wastewater, food waste, or agricultural AD sectors.
Why Join Us?
This role is a core "feeder" into senior technical and strategic leadership positions. You will work at the heart of the UK’s energy transition, building a global profile through the WBA while ensuring the UK’s biomethane sector remains a world leader in quality and safety.
