The Opportunity

This is the kind of role that tends to appeal to engineers and analysts who enjoy operating close to difficult technical problems inside genuinely secure operational environments. The work sits within high-side National Security programmes where teams support complex communications, protocol and software capability across sensitive operational systems. Engineers here are typically trusted with broad technical ownership and are given the space to contribute across analysis, development and wider engineering discussions rather than being confined to narrowly defined delivery functions. What often attracts people to these environments is the level of technical exposure and the collaborative nature of the teams. The structure is relatively flat and engineering-led, with close interaction between developers, analysts, technical leadership and operational stakeholders. There is strong emphasis on problem-solving, technical curiosity and delivering capability that has direct operational relevance. The environment suits people who enjoy understanding systems deeply, working through challenging technical detail and contributing across all compass points of secure delivery. For engineers who prefer technically grounded cultures over heavily process-driven environments, it offers meaningful work, long-term programme exposure and the opportunity to work alongside experienced teams operating across the National Security space.

The Role

You'll be joining a multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for supporting protocol analysis, software development and wider technical capability within secure National Security programmes. The role combines analytical problem-solving with hands-on software engineering, making it well suited to somebody comfortable moving between investigation, development and collaborative technical delivery activities. Teams work closely together onsite within secure environments, contributing across the full engineering lifecycle from technical analysis and solution design through to implementation, testing and ongoing capability support.

  • Supporting protocol analysis and software development activities across secure operational systems and communications environments.
  • Contributing to the design, development and maintenance of bespoke software capability within high-side programmes.
  • Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to investigate technical challenges and support operational problem-solving.
  • Producing secure, maintainable code and contributing to collaborative engineering practices across delivery teams.
  • Assisting with technical investigations, system analysis and the interpretation of complex protocol or data behaviour.
  • Supporting detailed technical documentation, knowledge sharing and collaborative engineering discussions.
  • Participating in agile delivery activities and contributing to technical planning, refinement and wider programme delivery.
  • Working onsite within secure customer environments alongside engineers, analysts and operational stakeholders.

The team is less interested in rigid role boundaries and more focused on people who are technically curious, adaptable and comfortable contributing across wider engineering challenges. Strong communicators tend to do well because engineers are trusted with visibility, technical ownership and close collaboration across secure multidisciplinary teams. It is a strong fit for people who enjoy technically demanding work, operational relevance and engineering cultures where problem-solving is valued over process.

Security Requirements

Candidates must hold active transferable UK*C DV clearance and be willing to undergo BPSS prior to starting.
