We Are Donors is a UK-registered charity dedicated to increasing the number of organ and blood donors across the UK through student-led education and awareness initiatives.
We are a network of university groups that train students to deliver educational talks and workshops in schools, organise awareness campaigns, and run blood donation drives on university campuses.
To date, we have engaged with over 20,000 students and helped recruit more than 3,000 blood donors.
About the Role
We Are Donors is seeking a volunteer HR Director to support the charity as we transition our existing employee from an agency arrangement to direct employment by the charity.
This is also an opportunity to establish and oversee the charity's HR function, ensuring compliance with employment legislation, maintaining appropriate policies and procedures, and providing ongoing support and oversight for any We Are Donors employees.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake an initial project to coordinate the transition of the charity's existing employee from an agency contract to direct employment by We Are Donors.
This will include ensuring all legal, contractual, payroll, and HR requirements are appropriately managed during the transfer, and working with trustees to establish processes for managing the employment relationship going forward.
- To review existing and maintain employment documentation and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and best practice.
- Act as the charity's lead for HR, providing advice and guidance to trustees relating to employment legislation, HR policy and HR best practice.
- Oversee employee contracts, performance management processes, and employment records.
- Support the charity in managing any future recruitment or staffing matters.
- Provide guidance on employee wellbeing, performance, and workplace issues where required.
- Attend and contribute to monthly management committee meetings.
- About the person
You’ll be an experienced HR generalist, with the capacity to reliably offer a few hours of support each month, probably a little more in the early stages.
You’ll be able to demonstrate
- Expert knowledge of HR best practice, employment legislation and employment contracts.
- Demonstrable experience in a senior HR management/leadership role.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgement.
- Highly proficient to handle sensitive and confidential information.
- Some experience within a relevant sector (e. g., non-profit organisations) is helpful, but not essential.
- Terms of Engagement
This will be a voluntary position within the National Steeing Committee of We Are Donors, with a general anticipated time commitment of 2-3 hours per month (probably more in the initial stages to complete the initial project).
The HR Director will work independently, on a remote basis, and report directly to the Board of Trustees.
The appointment is for an initial term of one year, with reviews after three months and at the end of the first year.
There is the opportunity to renew the position beyond the initial term.
Please note that all members of We Are Donors are volunteers and no remuneration is provided for this role.
