About our Tax team
Our Tax team provides a broad range of specialist tax services to individuals and businesses, helping clients understand and meet their tax obligations while identifying opportunities and providing practical advice.
Working closely with clients and colleagues across the Firm, the team combines technical knowledge with a practical, client‑focused approach. As a Graduate Trainee, you’ll gain hands‑on experience across personal and corporate tax work while developing the technical and professional skills needed to build a successful career in Tax.
JOB DESCRIPTION – Graduate Trainee – Tax
Role Purpose
The Graduate Trainee supports the delivery of high-quality tax services to clients, developing their technical knowledge and professional skills through practical experience and structured training.
Working alongside experienced tax professionals, the role involves assisting with the preparation and submission of personal and corporate tax returns, communicating with clients, maintaining accurate records and developing an understanding of relevant tax legislation.
The role also provides the opportunity to work towards the ATT qualification, with ongoing coaching, mentoring and professional development throughout.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Delivery
- Assist with the preparation and processing of personal tax and corporate tax returns and supporting information.
- Review client information and documentation to ensure information is complete and accurate.
- Develop an understanding of relevant tax legislation and how it applies to individual client circumstances.
- Liaise with clients to obtain information and supporting documentation required to complete tax returns.
- Support the approval and submission process for both personal tax and corporate tax returns.
- Develop responsibility for a small portfolio of personal tax and corporate tax clients as knowledge and experience develops.
- Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date client records and documentation.
- Work to agreed deadlines and quality standards, keeping colleagues informed of progress and any issues arising.
- Undertake appropriate additional tax‑related tasks as directed by senior members of the Tax team.
Quality, Workflow and Professional Standards
- Complete work accurately and with a high level of attention to detail.
- Maintain clear, organised and appropriate client records and working papers.
- Identify missing information, queries or issues and seek appropriate guidance where required.
- Ensure work is completed within agreed timescales and to the required quality standards.
- Apply a professional and thorough approach to all client work.
- Maintain confidentiality and handle client information appropriately and in accordance with Wbg policies and procedures.
- Develop an understanding of professional standards and the importance of quality in the delivery of tax services.
Client Service and Relationships
- Liaise professionally and confidently with clients throughout the tax return process.
- Build positive and constructive working relationships with clients and colleagues.
- Communicate queries and requests for information clearly and appropriately.
- Develop an understanding of clients’ individual circumstances and how these may impact their tax position.
- Support the delivery of a consistent, responsive and high‑quality service to clients.
- Develop confidence in communicating with clients as experience and knowledge increase.
Team Support and Development
- Work collaboratively with Tax colleagues and the wider Firm to deliver work effectively.
- Take ownership of allocated tasks, seeking support and guidance where needed.
- Support the wider Tax team with routine administrative activities, including daily mail, annual information requests and payment reminders.
- Participate in training, professional development and knowledge‑sharing activities.
- Take responsibility for developing technical and professional knowledge relevant to Tax.
- Apply knowledge gained through professional study to practical client situations.
- Contribute to a positive, supportive and high‑performing team environment.
- Undertake additional appropriate responsibilities as skills and experience develop.
Professional Development
- Work towards the ATT qualification with full support from Wbg.
- Balance professional study with practical client experience
- Receive regular coaching, mentoring and feedback from experienced colleagues.
- Develop technical knowledge, professional judgement and client‑facing skills.
- Work towards achieving professional exam success alongside delivering a high‑quality service to clients.
- Take increasing responsibility for client work as knowledge, skills and confidence develop.
Skills and Experience
- Working towards, or holding, a relevant honours degree, with a minimum 2:1 preferred.A degree in Finance, Accountancy, or a related discipline would be advantageous
- Strong academic background with excellent communication and analytical skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues.
- Organised and able to manage time effectively across client work, professional development and other responsibilities.
- Comfortable working independently while also contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Able to demonstrate attention to detail and a commitment to producing high‑quality work.
- A genuine interest in developing a career within Tax
- Previous experience within a professional office environment is beneficial but not essential.
