Greenhouse Gas Protocol is the world’s leading authority and international standard setter on corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions accounting. Building on a 25-year partnership between World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), GHG Protocol works with governments, industry associations, NGOs, businesses, academia and other organizations. GHG Protocol also provides standards, tools and online training to help countries and cities track progress towards their climate goals. GHG Protocol operates in a technically complex, fast-evolving, and politically sensitive space at the intersection of climate policy, corporate disclosure, and market standards.

Job Overview

The GHG Protocol is looking for an experienced Director to lead the GHG Protocol communications team and develop and execute a strategic communications function that strengthens GHG Protocol’s institutional voice and credibility. The Director will ensure communications activities effectively convey the value proposition of GHG Protocol and continues to build a reliable, credible brand. This position will oversee narrative development and positioning, crisis communications/issue management, media relations and rapid response, and ensure effective engagement with GHG Protocol’s key audiences including governance bodies, businesses, academia, NGOs, policy makers, standard setters, media, and other institutional partners.

Main Responsibilities

  • Strategic leadership: Collaborate with the leadership team and other GHG Protocol team members to design and implement a comprehensive communications strategy including KPIs that aligns with the overarching goals of the GHG Protocol and anticipates communications needs and proactively prepare for challenges that may arise.
  • Content creation: Drive clear and consistent messaging and develop core content to position the GHG Protocol across key channels (website, social media, newsletters, media, internal comms); provide other communications support as required by the GHG Protocol leadership team.
  • Media relations and external messaging: Serve as the primary media contact for GHG Protocol, carefully track relevant media coverage and determine when proactive outreach and responses are appropriate; drive engagement of core stakeholders to act as messengers.
  • Crisis communication: Develop and implement communication plans to effectively manage and mitigate potential threats to the organization's reputation, including related to standards, policy, or emerging criticism.
  • Event positioning: Provide communications and positioning advice and support for key external events (e.g., New York Climate Week, COP, etc.).
  • Internal engagement: Collaborate with other GHG Protocol communications team members to provide strategic communications advice and support the roll out of deliverables across all of GHG Protocol’s workstreams, maintaining message alignment across WRI, WBCSD, and other partners.
  • Team management: Manage, mentor and build out the GHG Protocol communication team in line with organizational growth, setting day-to-day priorities, improving workflows and supporting individuals in achieving their full potential by providing feedback, guidance, and development opportunities.

Qualifications, skills and experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree or a higher education with a focus on communications, marketing and/or journalism. Additional education with a focus on sustainable business practices would be an asset.
  • Significant experience in communications and marketing, with a particular focus on sustainability, including experience in leading, coaching, developing and mentoring a team of direct reports.
  • Proven ability to design and execute integrated communications strategies that translate strategic priorities into operational plans, anticipate risks, mitigate issues, and position the organization for long-term success.
  • Experience navigating high-stakes, sensitive, or contested issues and advising leadership through scrutiny, and reputational risk is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong understanding of digital communications and social media.
  • Deep experience in building and maintaining close relationships with key stakeholders to gain commitment and influence action that will advance shared interests and organizational goals.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is critical, fluency in additional languages is an advantage.
  • Resilient, agile and entrepreneurial mindset.

The position is fixed-term for 1 year and is based in London with occasional travel.
