The Waymo Safety team works to promote and help to continuously improve the safety of Waymo’s fully autonomous driving technology. Our experts develop safety goals and strategies, and conduct safety engineering analyses to ensure safety is being considered throughout the design and development of our vehicles. The team develops and promotes safety strategies and policies for autonomous vehicles for its work with regulatory authorities, lawmakers, law enforcement and public and non-profit organizations. Our Safety Team also helps advise on compliance with applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations.
In this hybrid role, you will report to an Environment, Health and Safety Manager. You will:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive EHS management system for Waymo's EMEA operations, based on Waymo’s Global EHS Standards.
- Ensure full compliance with all applicable local, national, and regional EHS laws and regulations by proactively tracking regulatory changes, maintaining the EHS legal register, and implementing necessary program updates.
- Effectively manage EHS in a workforce consisting of both employees and third-party vendors by conducting EHS assurance activities, managing EHS event response including investigations and root cause analyses, and overseeing performance to ensure safe work practices.
- Provide EHS support for Waymo's operating partners, ensuring their operations adhere to all legal requirements and Waymo's internal safety standards through regular assurance activities, training, and collaboration.
- Conduct EHS risk assessments for all Waymo work activities within the region, identifying and executing opportunities to implement improved controls to mitigate hazards.
- Drive a culture of continuous improvement by developing and monitoring key EHS performance indicators (KPIs), preparing regular reports for leadership, and championing safety initiatives across the region.
You have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in an EHS role, with at least 3 years in a regional management capacity.
- In-depth knowledge of UK and EU EHS regulations and standards applicable to vehicle maintenance, construction, and general industry.
- Demonstrated experience managing EHS within operational facilities such as transportation, manufacturing, or energy.
- Proven track record managing safety aspects related to vendors and contractors.
- NEBOSH National/International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (or an equivalent, such as an NVQ Level 6) and membership in a professional body (e.g., GradIOSH, CMIOSH).
We prefer:
- Experience in the autonomous vehicle, automotive, or high-tech hardware industry.
- Specific expertise in the safety and environmental aspects of high-voltage systems and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
- Experience managing EHS programs across multiple countries within the EMEA region, navigating diverse regulatory landscapes.
- Familiarity with implementing and managing ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems.
- Strong analytical skills with experience using data and metrics to identify trends, measure performance, and drive EHS improvements.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and build strong relationships with external partners, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
Travel: Approximately 40% travel, with 30% within the EMEA region and 10% outside EMEA.
The expected base salary range for this full-time position is listed below. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level. Waymo employees are also eligible to participate in Waymo’s discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and generous company benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements.
