CTO – £170k + Meaningful Equity – UK Remote
The Opportunity
Join a high‑growth consumer technology startup building data‑heavy, high‑traffic gaming products. This is a rare opportunity to take full ownership of technology, architecture and engineering culture while steering a major transformation toward app‑first experiences and AI‑native development.
You’ll operate at a strategic and hands‑on level, working directly with the CEO and leadership team to define the technical vision, scale the engineering function, and embed modern AI tools and agents deeply into product, platform and internal workflows.
About the Role
They’re looking for a CTO to lead technology across multiple sports products and grow the engineering team from a small, high‑leverage group into a multi‑squad organisation over time.
They will:
- Drive the shift to app‑first using React Native/Expo while maintaining a performant web experience.
- Own the technical roadmap, architecture and platform evolution across frontend, backend, data and cloud infrastructure.
- Define what it means to be AI‑native in practice, integrating agents, copilots and workflow automation across engineering and non‑engineering teams.
- Lead, scale and mentor a growing engineering organisation with a high‑trust, high‑output culture.
- Set pragmatic standards for reliability, observability, CI/CD, testing, security and data privacy.
- Make key build‑vs‑buy decisions, manage cloud/AI costs and ensure the platform can handle peak seasonal traffic.
- Partner closely with Product, Design and the CSO to deliver exceptional user experiences powered by modern AI capabilities.
Skills / Experience
Must have
- Experience leading engineering in a product‑led environment (consumer, SaaS or data‑heavy).
- Proven experience scaling teams into multi‑squad organisations.
- Ability to balance strategic leadership with hands‑on architecture and problem solving.
- Strong grounding in modern web, mobile and cloud architectures.
- Real, practical experience using AI coding tools, agents or workflow automation (not just experimentation).
- Track record of improving engineering practices at scale: CI/CD, testing, observability, security, reliability.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to explain trade‑offs and make business‑driven decisions.
- Learning‑first mindset with a strong bias to pragmatic, simple solutions.
Nice to have
- Experience with production AI/ML systems (LLMs, ranking, recommendations).
- Exposure to sports, fantasy, real‑time data or event‑driven products.
- Experience integrating AI agents or tool‑calling frameworks.
- Experience working with third‑party or sports data providers.
Tech Stack (experience not required in all areas)
- Frontend: React Native/Expo, Next.js, React, TypeScript
- Data: Postgres, SQL, some NoSQL
- Cloud: GCP (Cloud Run, managed services), plus some AWS
- AI & Tooling: Mix of commercial LLMs and local tools
