A growing engineering team in the renewable energy sector is looking for a Hardware Engineer to support the development and deployment of sensing hardware used in the field. This role is focused on getting hardware delivered efficiently and working reliably in harsh conditions. You’ll be involved across the full lifecycle, from early builds through to testing, certification, and release. It’s hands-on, with a mix of PCB-level work, system integration, and practical problem-solving.
What you’ll be working on:
- NPI activities for new hardware solutions, mainly around test and production readiness
- Developing hardware and sensor solutions as part of a wider engineering team
- Supporting PCB design, bring-up, and debugging, including working with analogue circuits and signal integrity considerations
- Working through practical challenges across enclosures, connectors, cabling, and integration
- Building and refining prototypes to support development and validation
- Planning and running testing for new products, including defining test strategies
- Carrying out in-house testing and coordinating external validation (EMC, environmental, shock/vibration)
- Supporting component selection and working with suppliers where needed
- Producing and maintaining technical documentation i.e; assembly guides, test reports, user-facing docs
- Working with quality teams to ensure products meet required standards
- Supporting certification work for hardware used in industrial environments
What they’re looking for:
- Background in hardware, electronics, or industrial product development
- Experience working with PCBs, including debugging and bring-up
- Understanding of analogue electronics and real-world signal behaviour
- Comfortable working hands-on: building, testing, and troubleshooting
- Degree or equivalent in electrical, electronic, mechanical engineering, or similar
- Methodical approach, with attention to detail and follow-through
- Experience working to engineering standards and certification requirements
- Able to work with different teams and external suppliers without things getting lost in translation
- Willing to get up to speed quickly on the product and its constraints
- Experience with PLM tools (e.g. Arena) and tools like Jira is helpful, but not essential
- Exposure to certification standards such as CE, UL, or UKCA is useful
What success looks like:
- Hardware performs as expected when deployed, not just in test conditions
- PCB and analogue issues are identified and resolved early, not during late-stage testing
- Testing is structured and catches problems before release
- Documentation is clear enough that others can build, test, and support the product properly
- Certification is handled without last-minute surprises
- Process improvements with fewer recurring issues coming back from the field over time
Progression:
This role builds into broader ownership over time, typically moving into:
- Leading NPI activities from prototype through to release
- Owning test strategy and validation approaches across products
- Taking responsibility for certification and compliance
- Supporting field issues, customer returns, and technical resolution
