Who you’ll be joining
We’re problem solvers at heart. Sometimes the answer is technology, sometimes it is strategy, and sometimes it is a strong cup of tea and a bit of thoughtful conversation. Whatever it takes, we work it out with our clients. We’re an IT consultancy that helps organisations get the best out of their technology. That means keeping them secure and keeping the bad guys out, making sure everything works and is easy to use, and doing smart things with data and software to give their business an edge. It is important work, and we care about doing it well and for the right reasons.
Life at Waterstons is friendly, flexible and built on trust. We hire people who are curious, thoughtful and good at getting to the heart of a problem. You get support, trust and room to grow in a place that still feels human. The unlimited holidays and private healthcare are a nice touch, although most people stay because it feels like the right place to do good work with good people.
What You’ll Be Doing
This is a new role, and it matters. You will take ownership of business development for our Technology & Support division, building and driving a pipeline that converts into meaningful work. You will spend your time out in front of clients and prospects, starting conversations, shaping opportunities, and winning work. Alongside this, you will play a key role in helping us clearly and simply explain what we do and how we deliver value to clients. You will focus on driving growth across Managed Services, Technology projects, and recurring revenue, working closely with technical teams, marketing, and other Business Development Leads to identify and close opportunities. This role can be based in Durham, Glasgow, or London. The salary range is £60,000–£80,000 in Durham and Glasgow, and £70,000–£85,000 in London.
Your Day-to-Day
- Finding and pursuing new client opportunities across Managed Services, Technology projects, and the wider business
- Owning and managing the Technology & Support pipeline, including tracking progress, identifying gaps, and maintaining momentum
- Getting in front of prospects early to shape conversations and influence outcomes
- Leading client-facing discussions to understand challenges and position solutions effectively
- Building trust with prospective clients by being useful, straightforward, and easy to work with
- Attending and leading pre-sales meetings alongside technical colleagues
- Contributing to and leading tender responses and proposal writing
- Working with Architects and Engineers to develop commercially and technically sound proposals
- Representing Waterstons at events, roundtables, and industry forums
- Collaborating with Marketing to improve how we position and communicate our services
What we're looking for
If some (or most) of the following sound like you, we'd love to hear from you:
- Experience in business development within a technology consultancy, managed services, or professional services environment
- Comfortable engaging with senior stakeholders such as CIOs, CTOs, and IT Directors
- Strong track record of building a pipeline and converting opportunities into revenue
- Experience leading pre-sales conversations and contributing to proposals or tenders
- Ability to work closely with technical teams to shape solutions that clients want to buy
- Commercial awareness and the ability to turn conversations into tangible outcomes
- Experience supporting marketing activity, such as events, campaigns, or thought leadership, is a bonus
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with a clear and straightforward style
Beyond experience, we’re looking for someone who:
- Cares about doing good work for clients and enjoys winning it in the first place
- Can manage multiple opportunities and priorities without losing focus
- Is comfortable working without a rigid playbook and can figure things out as they go
- Builds credibility with technical teams and earns their respect
- Communicates clearly and avoids unnecessary jargon
How We Take Care of You
As well as offering a competitive salary, we have an attractive benefits package including:
- A healthy work-life balance with flexible and agile working being the norm
- Unlimited holiday allowance
- EV car scheme (salary sacrifice)
- Room to grow with supported development opportunities and sponsored training
- Enhanced family policies
- If you ever need it, company sick pay and life assurance
- Supported wellbeing with regular initiatives, an employee assistance programme and private medical insurance
- Flexible benefits such as a dental scheme, eye care support, season ticket loan and cycle to work
We require a security check to be carried out on all colleagues due to the nature of some of our clients’ industries. Waterstons is committed to creating an inclusive, understanding, and flexible place to work. We value diversity, equality and inclusion and encourage everyone to 'bring their whole selves' to work. We believe that a company that works to truly embrace and value diversity, create an environment where everyone from any background can do their best work, and feel valued and appreciated is a better company to work for.
