At Ford Halewood Transmission Limited, which develops and manufactures transmissions, approximately 500 people are employed. The plant has a proud 59-year history as a local employer, dedicated to manufacturing high-quality products. Ford is currently investing up to £230 million at the facility to transform it to build electric power units for future all-electric passenger and commercial vehicles.
The four-year engineering apprenticeship will initially cover broad-based training in Electrical and Mechanical skills at Waterside Training in St Helens. In years 2, 3, and 4, working apprentices will work on the plant at Halewood alongside qualified craftsmen in either an Electrical or Mechanical discipline while continuing to attend college day release up to Level 4 HNC.
New elements introduced to the programme this year incorporate a Quality Engineering bias to broaden the knowledge of apprentices across the fields of the workforce. Engineers work as part of a team to provide engineering support to multi-million-pound plant operations, maintain and repair equipment to improve efficiency and product quality, and carry out fault finding diagnosis and problem solving.
Other avenues of experience may involve working in quality-oriented areas of the plant, such as measurement and material laboratories and quality evaluation garage.
The Maintenance Craft apprenticeship will include activities such as:
- Machine and equipment maintenance
- Fault finding and diagnostics
- Using preventative maintenance systems
- Restoring components, undertaking repair, replacement, and servicing
The Quality bias for the apprenticeship will include activities such as:
- Supporting commissioning new measurement equipment
- Measurement of internal and external purchased components using laboratory equipment
- Supporting the development of test methods and continuous improvement opportunities
- Producing measurement reports for components measured
- Assisting with Quality investigations providing measuring support
- Working within a team to ensure tasks are in line with targets
Entry Requirements: GCSE in Maths (grade 5) and Science (grade 5). Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
Skills Required: Analytical skills, Logical thinking, Initiative, Work Ethic, Time Management.
Training to be Provided: Engineering maintenance technician - dual discipline (level 3).
Things to Consider: You must be able to travel to both Waterside based at St Helens and Ford based at Halewood to attend both off-the-job and on-the-job training.
