Overview

Join the Quan Portfolio Mass Spectrometry Development team and help shape the future of quantitative mass spectrometry. We develop Waters' next-generation single and tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry platforms, supporting critical applications across pharmaceutical development, bioanalysis, environmental testing, and food safety.

We are seeking a Senior Development Scientist to contribute to the definition, development, integration, and verification of innovative mass spectrometry solutions. The role will focus on solving complex technical challenges, developing system requirements, supporting instrument design and integration activities, and helping deliver next-generation analytical instrumentation across the Quan portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Work within the company’s instrument development process and relevant regulatory frameworks to:
    • Produce Product Specification and Engineering Requirements documentation and provide design direction to the engineering development teams.
    • Produce Product Specification Verification documents to provide test evidence that design requirements have been met.
    • Develop, and work in partnership with other stakeholders to implement, the system integration strategy such that key attributes are risk managed and that project timelines are met.
    • Contribute to design reviews, FMEAs, phase reviews and other project related activity as appropriate.
  • Take an active role in the development and support of existing MS instruments and technologies (either directly identified or guided through consultation with Research, Engineering, Operations or Service) to:
    • Improve performance, improve quality or reduce cost.
    • Define critical parameters and interface requirements for integration into commercial products.
  • Work in partnership with MS Research to:
    • Assist in the evaluation and usage of new technologies.
    • Provide integration skills to aid the development and subsequent transfer of new technologies (including their requirements and specifications) into commercial instrumentation.
  • Ensure that Quality system standards and Health and Safety standards are adhered to at all times.
  • Perform other duties in a professional manner as deemed necessary by the Organisation.
  • Monitor developments in the technical community and competitors products to identify potential development opportunities.
  • To act as system designer and technical authority for designated MS instruments when required.

Qualifications

Education:

  • A first degree or equivalent in Physics, Chemistry or a related subject.

Experience:

  • Proven experience in the development of MS instrumentation, or similar scientific or analytical instrumentation containing vacuum, particle optics, precision mechanics, electronics, and firmware/software.
  • Hands-on experience of MS system and sub-assemblies.
  • A technical understanding of the requirements, procedures and physical resources needed to verify sub-assemblies in system environments and complete MS products.

Competencies:

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven practical experience of mass spectrometry or a related discipline.
  • Ability to work with process.
  • Diagnostic abilities to determine root causes and provide fault data.
  • Ability to work in ad hoc project teams.

Travel (If Applicable):

  • A limited amount of travel may be required as part of the role, though the role is primarily based at a Waters location.
