Our Building Structures team works on a wide range of projects across multiple sectors, providing high quality structural engineering services from concept through to delivery.
We are seeking a motivated undergraduate Civil Engineering student to join our Building Structures team in Sheffield for a placement year. This role offers hands-on experience within a professional consultancy environment, supporting the delivery of building structures projects while developing practical engineering skills. The successful candidate will work closely with engineers and technicians, contributing to real projects and gaining exposure to industry standard tools, processes and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Key Responsibilities- Assist with the analysis and design of building structures using relevant engineering software and hand calculations
- Support senior engineers in the preparation of structural designs, calculations and technical reports
- Produce and review drawings in collaboration with technicians and designers
- Assist with site inspections, surveys and data collection as required
- Participate in project meetings and internal design reviews
- Ensure work is carried out in accordance with relevant standards, codes of practice and health & safety requirements
- Support the wider team with general engineering and administrative tasks as needed
- Strong interest in structural and civil engineering within the built environment
- Good numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Organised, proactive, and keen to learn
- Currently studying towards a BEng or MEng degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering
- Must be undertaking a recognised sandwich course with a mandatory placement year
- Familiarity with structural analysis or design software
- Basic understanding of UK design standards (e.g. Eurocodes)
- Previous relevant work experience or site exposure
- A supportive and collaborative working environment
- Practical, hands-on experience on live building structures projects
- Mentorship and guidance from experienced structural engineers
