Water Direct is the UK's leading provider of alternative water supplies, delivering emergency and planned services to water utility companies, commercial organisations, and critical infrastructure nationwide. In 2024, we began a strategic investment in technology to improve service delivery, transparency, and operational efficiency — building a new digital platform to manage our operations and create the foundation for growth into new services and markets.

Our Product Vision

We are building the Water Direct Platform – a web and mobile platform that connects our clients, operations team, assets, drivers, and 3rd party contractors. This will transform a historically manual, phone-and-spreadsheet based process of managing water outages into a transparent, efficient, and scalable system — improving outcomes for households and businesses across the UK.

The Team

We operate a lean, highly capable product and engineering team led by our CPO and Engineering Lead — both ex-Googlers who previously scaled a SaaS product from inception to acquisition. Our core technology stack is Python / Django (backend) with HTML/HTMLX/React (web) and Flutter (mobile), supported by a modern cloud-native toolchain for CI/CD, monitoring, and data. As we move beyond core operations, we are increasingly exploring automation, data-driven decisioning, and AI-enabled workflows.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Full-Stack Software Developer to play a key role in building and scaling the Water Direct platform. This is a hands-on, delivery focused contract role suited to someone comfortable working remotely as part of a distributed international team.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • A full-stack senior engineer with minimum 5+ years' experience of Python / Django
  • Experience building modern web applications
  • Experienced designing and maintaining scalable, well-structured APIs
  • Comfortable taking ownership of features from concept to production
  • Able to work autonomously in a hybrid, async-friendly environment
  • Pragmatic and delivery-focused, with strong commercial awareness
  • Comfortable collaborating and supporting Engineering leadership to tactically accelerate feature development
  • Proactive in improving code quality, architecture, and developer experience
  • Happy mentoring and directing other engineers and contributing to technical direction
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-moving, real-world operational environment

Logistics and Remuneration:

  • Competitive day rate – 6-month initial contract with option to extend
  • Fully remote role (UK or international) - either as contractor or employed through agency
  • Working hours aligned with UK time zones

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned.
