Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma/GED.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Minimum one (1) year of experience in the field of commercial cleaning and building maintenance.
- Minimum one (1) year of experience working with and supervising other employees or three (3) years of experience as a WCPS custodian.
- Knowledge of tools and equipment to perform minor maintenance and operations duties including the assembling of furniture.
- Ability to use computer systems to perform work functions including ordering supplies, entering work orders, and receiving/sending e-mails.
- Willingness to participate in in‑service training programs.
- Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.

- Ability to diagnose minor issues within a school system's plumbing, mechanical, and school equipment.
Role Responsibilities
- Working under the direction of a Custodial Engineer I.
- Maintain the physical plant of a middle school.
- All phases of interior cleaning by using hand and machine tools.
- Acquire and develop knowledge of the school's mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
- Develop proficiency in the function, use, and care of all emergency lighting, fire protection and security systems.
- Perform and direct all phases of grounds‑keeping including necessary snow removal.
- Make minor repairs to equipment and buildings.
- Make monthly safety checks of the entire facility.
- Order supplies and maintain a proper inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Maintain and operate all types of mechanical equipment.
- Provide required services to the athletic facilities and programs.
- Work closely with the Custodial Engineer I in the implementation of all duties.
- Assist the principal and other professional staff with co‑curricular and extracurricular activities as appropriate.
- Provide custodial services to groups using schools after hours and on non‑school days.
Essential Job Functions
- Direct and supervise other custodians.
- Train and provide proper orientation in methods and use of cleaning materials and equipment to new custodians assigned to the school.
- Coordinate with Custodial Engineer I duties for Second/Third shift staff assignments.
- Develop a summer cleaning program to provide complete cleaning during the summer months.
- Keep employees advised of BOE policies and practices, providing interpretation and explanation where necessary.
- Review and evaluate performance of staff with Custodial Engineer I monthly and determine necessary adjustments to maintain a process for improvement.
- Demonstrate courteous and professional demeanor to all stakeholders of Washington County Public Schools.
- Other duties as may be assigned.
Environmental Factors and Physical/Mental Requirements
- Ability to sufficiently and efficiently move throughout the building and grounds for extended periods.
- Must have use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with others as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, and hear.
- Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
- Ability to move, raise, lower, and carry objects up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis.
- Must be able to operate powered equipment.
- Must be able to bend, crouch, stoop, reach, walk stairs, climb, and shovel.
- Will be subjected to loud noises, dusts, fumes, and hot and cold outdoor temperatures.
