Salary: £52,000 - £58,000 per annum (inclusive of shift pay), dependent on experience.

About the Role

The Control Systems Engineer plays a crucial role in maintaining the reliability and efficiency of a diverse portfolio of power generation assets across the UK. This includes multiple Open Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGT) and diesel reciprocating generating units across various locations. The role is focused on monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting control systems, ensuring optimal performance while adhering to stringent safety and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the central control systems expert within the business, developing expertise across a variety of control systems.
  • Diagnose root causes of failures and implement solutions to enhance equipment reliability.
  • Maintain detailed documentation and logs of system performance, repairs, and diagnostics.
  • Analyze log files to optimize system functionality and efficiency.
  • Provide technical support to the EC&I Technicians and Engineering Teams for fault diagnostics and issue resolution.
  • Communicate any system issues or concerns observed during site visits.
  • Travel across the UK and occasionally overseas to support power plant operations and provide technical expertise.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with third-party control system engineering support teams.
  • Design, implement, and modify control systems, including SCADA, DCS, PLC programming, HMI graphical interfaces, and control panel layouts.
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as directed by the EC&I Manager or senior management.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Strong expertise in control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA/DCS, industrial networks, servers/drives, and data handling.
  • Experience in control system design, including layouts, panel wiring schematics, and modifications.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming (GE Fanuc Machine Edition and Siemens SIMATIC S7/WinCC essential; Allen Bradley Studio 5000 and Woodward GAP desirable).
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet, and serial interfaces.
  • Hands-on experience in HMI graphical interface development and enhancement.
  • Competence in troubleshooting and resolving complex technical challenges.
  • Basic understanding of compressible flow characteristics (natural gas, air) and fault diagnostics of field equipment, including instrumentation, actuators, and motors.
  • Familiarity with Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) for work orders, job planning, and procurement.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organizational abilities, and proficiency in computer applications.
  • Must hold a valid UK driver’s license and be eligible to work in the UK.

Working Conditions & Requirements

  • The role involves working in a power plant environment, requiring standing for extended periods, climbing stairs and ladders, and lifting up to 15 kg.
  • Mandatory use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for specific tasks.
  • Extensive travel across multiple UK sites and occasional international trips.
  • Participation in a Fitness for Duty Program, including pre-employment and random drug screenings.
  • Compliance with strict site smoking policies.
  • Standard working hours: Monday to Friday, 37 hours per week (08:00 - 16:00, with an early finish at 15:30 on Fridays).
