Family Attendance and Engagement Officer - Woolston Brook School

About us

Woolston Brook is a small, specialist school for children and young people aged 7-16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. The school provides an inclusive environment where all learners are cared for, valued and respected.

The role

Woolston Brook School is seeking to appoint a Family Attendance and Engagement Officer on a permanentbasis to join our wonderful team.

The Family Attendance and Engagement Officer will work alongside the Assistant Headteacher (Attendance, Behaviour and Welfare), the pastoral team, pupils, families, school staff and external agencies to improve attendance, punctuality and engagement in education.

The postholder will combine accurate attendance monitoring and administration with proactive, supportive work with families, recognising that poor attendance is often linked to complex barriers rather than a single cause.

You will:

  • Build positive, trusting and respectful relationships with pupils and parents/carers.
  • Identify barriers to attendance at the earliest opportunity and help families access appropriate support.
  • Provide consistent follow-up for persistent and severe absence, including home and welfare visits where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records, analyse data and support statutory attendance processes.
  • Work collaboratively with safeguarding, pastoral, SEND and external professionals so that attendance is understood as part of the wider picture of a child's wellbeing and access to education.
  • Promote a relational, trauma-informed and solution-focused approach that supports pupils to attend, engage and successfully reintegrate into education.

The postholder will have particular regard to the needs of pupils with SEMH, Autism and additional SEND, including pupils experiencing emotionally based barriers to school attendance. The role requires a balance of warmth, persistence and professional challenge, with the welfare and educational entitlement of the child at the centre of all work.

Woolston Brook School is committed to safeguarding and protecting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults as its number one priority. The successful applicants will be required to apply for an enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service. Further details can be found on the DBS website.
