DPS Games is a Wargaming studio, proudly backed by the global success of titles like World of Tanks. Based in Guildford, we are part of one of the world’s leading free-to-play PC game companies, with the resources and experience to support ambitious, long-term development. We’re currently building our next big project: a collaboration with a world-renowned name, an epic-scale military sci-fi fantasy, free-to-play game focused on delivering cinematic visual quality and a rich, immersive world. Now in the early stages of pre-production and prototyping, we’re looking for a Game Designer, to work on the 3 c’s – Characters, controls and camera, to build immersive player experiences.
What will you do?
- Define and drive the feel of the game. Own the player experience of vehicle movement, shooting, and combat — translating vague or intuitive feedback like “this feels too heavy” or “this doesn’t hit hard enough” into concrete, actionable design.
- Prototype in Unreal. Build and iterate quickly using Blueprints to test movement, camera, weapons, and vehicle handling — proving ideas in-engine and bringing the game’s soul to life through feel-first gameplay.
- Collaborate across disciplines. Work closely with engineering, animation, audio, and VFX teams to guide and align the execution of gameplay systems with the intended player experience. Your ownership goes beyond just design — you’re there from concept through polish.
- Author clear, actionable design documentation and keep it up to date as features evolve through development.
- Champion player immersion by ensuring all design decisions reinforce a cohesive, responsive, and engaging gameplay experience.
What are we looking for?
- A designer who understands game feel at a deep level — especially for vehicle combat, weapon handling, and moment-to-moment player interaction.
- Ability to work from loose, abstract feedback and distill it into meaningful gameplay improvements.
- Strong Unreal Engine (4/5) knowledge and confident building prototypes in Blueprints.
- A creative problem-solver who can balance gameplay, responsiveness, and visual clarity while staying true to the game’s identity.
- Collaborative mindset — you’re someone who thrives in cross-functional teams and knows how to inspire and align others behind a vision.
- Passion for vehicle combat games and a strong sense of what makes them satisfying.
What additional skills will help you stand out?
- Experience shipping or contributing to a live or free-to-play action game, ideally with vehicles or a strong combat focus.
- Background in systems like aiming, recoil, camera shake, vehicle suspension, or hit reactions.
- Experience using feedback loops (like playtesting or telemetry) to fine-tune feel and player experience.
- Strong understanding of combat balance, pacing, and system tuning.
Work mode
Hybrid - 3 days of work from the Guildford office. This role is not eligible for relocation/immigration support.
Benefits
- 5 weeks of Annual Leave per calendar year - increasing over time to a maximum 30 days per year, with the ability to buy up to an additional 5 days through our holiday buy scheme.
- Additional paid time off (Birthday Leave, Marriage Leave, Compassionate Leave).
- Sick Leave Compensation and enhanced Maternity & Paternity Leave Benefits.
- Dog-friendly office.
- Onsite canteen (with an endless supply of free snacks and drinks).
- Video games area.
- Family coverage for Private Medical Insurance (pre-existing conditions are covered), Life Insurance, Pension scheme offering a matched 4% tax free employee contribution.
- Mental well-being program (iFeel).
- Wellbeing perks (Mental Health Days, Dedicated Well-being room, Team of Mental Heath First Aiders).
- Career development and education opportunities within the company.
- Employee discounts via Perkbox.
- Personal Wargaming Gaming Account.
- Company events (including events for partners/children).
- Seniority Awards.
- Referral program - you can recommend the best talents to the Company and receive a reward.
