We have an excellent opportunity for an ambitious Senior / Principal Environmental Scientist who specialises in Water Quality to join our established and successful Water Team in our Stoke office. We are looking to grow the water quality workstream as part of expanding our team’s capacity to facilitate its continued success.
Wardell Armstrong have a strong, established workstream and openings in new and exciting markets. The Water Team’s water quality specialists provide expertise to deliver both specialist water quality projects and to support to other functions in Wardell Armstrong as part of multidisciplinary projects. The role will involve work on a diverse range of exciting projects for public and private sector clients. The role includes the opportunity to undertake important consultation with the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and Natural England on behalf of our clients.
We have worked on a variety of projects on the fate and transport of nitrogen and phosphorus in groundwater for regulators, both in support of the Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016 and Nutrient Neutrality required by the Habitats Regulations 2017. Our work also includes water quality modelling to support permitting for which training will be provided. Hydrogeochemical modelling is undertaken using Phreeqc to understand attenuation caused by pollutant interactions with mineral surfaces in aquifers, to support detailed quantitative risk assessments.

Experience in consultancy in the UK including project management and technical delivery of water quality projects and an ability to deliver high quality work within agreed timescales and budgets.

Familiarity with UK regulations and legislation, as well as relevant water quality standards. Experience with the Environment Agency (EA), Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) is advantageous.

Experience in providing written and financial input to tenders and proposal documents.

Experience in supporting, mentoring and training early career Environmental Scientists.

Fully capable of representing the firm at both internal and external meetings, with a track record of client and stakeholder engagement and strong interpersonal skills.

Experience in the collection of groundwater and surface water samples in accordance with best practice sampling methods and quality control of data.

Water quality modelling experience including modelling to support Nutrient Neutrality, modelling to support discharges to ground (Annex J5) and surface water (H1, RQP modelling), and Phreeqc modelling.

A relevant undergraduate degree in the environmental sciences, geoscience, or similar.

Chartered or working towards chartership with a relevant professional institution such as CIWEM.

CSCS card for safe working on construction sites.

A full UK driving licence
