Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Manager
Location: Enfield (North London)
Package: up to ÂŁ67,800, profit share scheme, life assurance, private healthcare, and award-winning pension scheme.
Contract: Full time, on-site with travel across the region
The Recipe Safety is our number one priority. As part of the site leadership team, you’ll partner with the General Manager to strengthen our HSE culture across a complex, 24/7 food manufacturing and high-throughput distribution environment. You’ll coach, influence and enable c.460 colleagues at Enfield to go home safe, every day, while protecting the environment.
The Role
- Deliver our national HSE strategy locally—turn policy into practice, embed best-in-class standards and keep us compliant with legal and company requirements.
- Be the trusted expert—give timely, pragmatic and legally robust advice to line managers on all things Health, Safety and Environment.
- Coach and upskill—identify site HSE learning needs (bakery & depot), build cost-effective training with our TL&D partners, and raise capability at every level.
- Drive continuous improvement—own the loop from risk assessments and audits through to action closure; learn from accidents/incidents and prevent reoccurrence.
- Own our HSE management systems—monitor performance against Warburtons’ HSE framework, recommend improvements, and contribute to company-wide projects.
- Lead engagement—run initiatives that boost commitment to HSE, from shopfloor to SLT, and measure progress through KPIs, audits and project delivery.
- Manage the numbers—keep local HSE spend on budget and focused on high-impact risk reduction.
- Grow others—line manage and develop a small team of HSE Advisors, setting clear goals and celebrating success.
Experience: 2+ years in a dedicated HSE role (FMCG or manufacturing/distribution ideal), including hands-on audit handling with internal & external parties.
Qualifications: NEBOSH Certificate (minimum). NEBOSH Diploma (or working towards) strongly preferred. Professional status: IOSH—Chartered (CMIOSH) or working towards. Environment: IEMA Environmental Foundation certificate, for permitted sites IEMA Associate Certificate.
Standards savvy: Strong working knowledge of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 (or OHSAS 18001 heritage) management systems.
Influence & communication: Clear, persuasive and impactful—able to build credibility fast with colleagues at all levels and external stakeholders.
Problem-solving mindset: You find safe, compliant, business-smart solutions—promoting safety as an enabler, not a blocker.
Decisive & accountable: Make timely calls, own the outcome, and keep momentum.
