Help showcase the achievements of local young people as our Social Media & Content Creator. Capture photos and videos at parade nights, competitions and events, and create engaging posts that celebrate cadet successes and inspire others to join Sea Cadets.
The Social Media & Content Creator plays an important role in helping Waltham Forest Sea Cadets & Royal Marines Cadets share its story with the wider community. Many of the incredible things cadets achieve each week go unseen beyond the unit. By capturing photos, videos and stories from parade nights, competitions and events, this volunteer helps ensure those achievements are recognised and celebrated.
Strong social media content helps raise awareness of the organisation and the opportunities it provides for young people. When families, schools and community members see the activities cadets take part in—such as boating, training exercises, competitions or award ceremonies—it helps them understand the value of the programme. Sharing cadet achievements can also be hugely motivating for the young people themselves. Seeing their successes recognised online helps build pride, confidence and a sense of belonging within the organisation. The role also supports recruitment of both cadets and volunteers. Positive and engaging social media posts help show potential recruits what the unit is like and the types of activities they could be involved in. This increased visibility helps the unit grow and ensures more young people can benefit from the opportunities Sea Cadets provides.
Social media also helps strengthen relationships with the local community. By sharing updates about events, achievements and activities, the unit can build stronger connections with supporters, partners and local organisations. Ultimately, the Social Media & Content Creator helps amplify the impact of the organisation by making sure the achievements of cadets are seen, celebrated and shared with a wider audience.
What are we looking for? We are looking for a creative and enthusiastic volunteer who enjoys photography, videography or social media. Experience creating content for platforms like Instagram, Facebook or TikTok. Good storytelling, basic photo/video editing skills and an interest in showcasing young people’s achievements would be valuable.
What will you be doing? We are looking for a Social Media & Content Creator to help share the story of Waltham Forest Sea Cadets & Royal Marines Cadets and highlight the incredible achievements of our young people. This role focuses on capturing and sharing the activities, successes and experiences of cadets through engaging social media content. Volunteers will help document what happens at the unit and turn those moments into posts that celebrate cadet achievements and promote the organisation within the local community.
A key responsibility will be attending parade nights or events to take photographs and short video clips of activities such as training sessions, competitions, award ceremonies, camps or community events. These images and videos help showcase the opportunities available to cadets and the positive environment within the unit. The volunteer will then help turn this content into social media posts that can be shared across our channels. This may involve writing captions, selecting images, creating simple graphics or editing short videos to highlight key moments. Content may include celebrating cadet achievements, sharing updates about activities, promoting events or highlighting the work of volunteers.
The Social Media & Content Creator will work with the unit leadership team and Unit Management Team to ensure posts are appropriate and aligned with the organisation’s messaging and safeguarding guidelines. This role is flexible and can be shaped around the volunteer’s skills and interests. Someone with an interest in photography, videography, digital marketing or storytelling will find plenty of opportunities to develop and use those skills. While some content will be captured during parade nights, additional posts can often be created remotely using previously captured material. This allows the role to remain flexible while still ensuring regular updates to our social media channels. By helping document the experiences of cadets and share them with the wider community, this volunteer will play a key role in telling the story of the unit and celebrating the achievements of the young people involved.
