Company Overview: Walter Watson Ltd, established in Castlewellan in 1967, sells Reinforcement Steel, Structural Steel, Steel Stockholding, Mobile Overhead Cranes, and Agricultural Equipment. Job Overview: Reporting to the Senior Mechanic and based in our maintenance facility (garage) on the Ballylough Road in Castlewellan, Co. Down, the successful applicant will conduct all aspects of planned and unplanned maintenance & inspections of a large fleet of flatbed trailers, flatbed extendable trailers (up to 38 metres), rigids, articulated tractor units, counterbalance and multi-directional forklifts, and MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms) in a safe and efficient manner to ensure all trucks and trailers are safe, roadworthy, and legally compliant.
Responsibilities:
- 8 weekly and 6 weekly checks of articulated lorry units, trailers, and rigid lorries
- Carry out running/routine repairs and maintenance, PSV and MOT preparations
- Conduct safety inspections and report any defects or issues identified
- Record job cards and safety checks on paper and update in the system (TerraMar)
- Call-out to breakdowns, fault diagnosis, and repairs
- Work to strict deadlines and planned workload
- Complete all relevant paperwork and documentation
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised working environment within the workshop
- Follow all company health and safety procedures and use equipment and tools safely
- Report any recurring faults, safety concerns, or equipment issues to the Senior Mechanic
- Support other team members and workshop staff when required to ensure operational efficiency
The workshop facility is complete with a 40' trailer lift, two post lifts, brake tester, and overhead cranes. Training can be provided. For a suitable candidate, there may also be the opportunity for an apprentice role which would permit attendance at College of one day per week.
Criteria:
- Hold an industry recognised qualification
- 2 years' minimum experience in a similar role
- Ability to identify faults and determine effective repairs
- Welding experience preferred
- HGV licence preferred
- Self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills
- Effective communication skills & literacy skills
- Flexible approach to working hours in a dynamic environment
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Awareness of health and safety standards
