Main duties of the job
Antenatal & Newborn screening fail safe officer Band 3
The Antenatal and Newborn (ANNB) Screening Failsafe Officer will be responsible for providing a specialist administrative (data collection and analysis) service that supports the antenatal and newborn screening team in the collation and entry of data for the National Antenatal and Newborn Screening Programmes, that include:
- Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening (SCAT)
- Screening for Infections
- Down’s Syndrome, Edward’s Syndrome and Patau’s Syndrome screening
- Fetal Anomaly Screening (FASP)
- Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE)
- Newborn Bloodspot Screening (NBBS)
The Failsafe Officer will develop and maintain systems and failsafe processes to ensure that all eligible mothers and babies are offered and complete the relevant screening pathways and to timely identify any potential breaches and action these appropriately to prevent any missed screening opportunities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This is a specialist administrative role and the post holder will have overall responsibility to provide efficient and effective administration of the 6 national Antenatal and Newborn (ANNB) screening programmes (Newborn Hearing screening, Newborn Bloodspot, Newborn Infant Physical Examination, Infectious diseases in pregnancy, Haemoglobinopathies and Fetal Anomaly), to provide screening assurance that each mother and baby has completed the appropriate screening pathway by providing continuous failsafe checks throughout each of the individual screening programmes. The post holder is accountable to the Antenatal and Newborn Screening Co-ordinator.
Qualifications
- GCSE pass in English Language and Maths, or equivalent.
- NVQ Level 2 or relevant experience
- commit to in house training
Experience
- Experience of customer care or dealing with the public.
- Experience of using hospital patient record system
- Experience of working in an acute hospital setting
- Knowledge and understanding of data protection confidentiality
- Understanding of Safeguarding issues
Skills
- Computer Literate.
- Demonstrates an understanding of confidentiality.
- Has an awareness of the Antenatal and newborn screening aspect of maternity
Knowledge
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
