Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust have invested in the radiology team and are looking to recruit enthusiastic, motivated, skilled locum radiologists to join the team of thirteen consultant radiologists, 2 consultant sonographers and 2 consultant reporting radiographers.

The successful candidate will have an interest in cross sectional imaging and any subspecialist interest will be considered, but the Trust is particularly keen to recruit radiologists with a subspecialist interest in non-vascular intervention, paediatrics or nuclear medicine. An ability to undertake non-vascular interventional procedures required in a busy District General Hospital would be an advantage, although any subspecialist interest would be considered. All other subspecialties will be considered depending on application volume and fulfilment of the posts.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Support a cancer MDT with appropriate preparation time; CT, MR reporting, general and within their subspecialist interest; ultrasound plus or minus some interventional activity and a small amount of plain film reporting.
  • Lead or participate in the development of departmental services, including potential roles such as REALM lead, Audit lead, Guideline lead, and modality leads.
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, and continuing professional development as part of the Supporting Professional Activities (SPA).
  • Adhere to the agreed clinical work plan and contribute to service delivery in line with the organisation’s requirements.
  • Engage in 7-day imaging service delivery as described for this post.
  • Direct clinical care (DCC) includes emergency work, outpatient activities, multi-disciplinary meetings about direct patient care, and administration related to the above; SPA includes training, education, and related activities.
  • Supervise and educate junior medical staff, radiographic, nursing, and other staff as appropriate.
  • Support clinical prioritisation of imaging requests and participate in the continuous development of the service, including evidence-based pathways and IT infrastructure improvements where applicable.
  • Contribute to a culture of learning and participate in REALM meetings.
  • Support the wider organisation in medical professional matters and work collaboratively with other organisations within the Black Country STP.
  • Additional responsibilities and targeted activities may be negotiated with the Trust for extra SPA time (e.g., educational supervision, clinical tutor, audit lead appraiser duties up to 0.5 SPA).

Job Plan and Working Pattern

Post is offered as 10 PA (session) subject to work schedule and mutual agreement with the Clinical Lead. Part-time working pattern (minimum 6 PA) is negotiable based on service demand and requires prior agreement with departmental management. The Trust supports 1.5 SPA for personal development and individual quality with a further negotiable PA time for educational supervision or undertaking a lead role.

Service Details

The department offers a 7-day imaging service. Consultants are resident on site until 8pm Monday to Friday on a rotational basis, and Saturday/Sunday for 6 hours. Consultants are not required to be on site during SPA time but must be able to attend within a reasonable time in an emergency. The job plan will be reviewed at 3 months and 6 months, with further review annually.
