Deputy Nuclear Medicine Advanced Practitioner | Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust

The post holder will have responsibility to act as a Unit Manager, deputising for the Clinical Lead. They will have a supervisory role within the Nuclear Medicine Team, ensuring the delivery of a high-quality Nuclear Medicine service. They will make an active contribution to the overall development and direction of the service.

They will also deputise with the line management of the Nuclear Medicine Team for the Clinical Lead, as required by the role. They will have significant experience, skills, and expertise in all aspects of Nuclear Medicine, including radiation protection and legislation and regulatory framework pertinent to Nuclear Medicine.

The postholder will ensure the continuous provision of a safe, professional, and high-quality Nuclear Medicine service to patients and other service users. They will ensure that the Nuclear Medicine Department procedures are carried out in accordance with local and national regulations, guidance, and legislatory framework.

The postholder will supervise, formulate and audit all training competency documents to maintain a framework for the training of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. This will include competencies for administration of radiopharmaceuticals, use of complex equipment, I.V. cannulation and ECG interpretation, as well as supervising and developing other medical staff within the Nuclear Medicine Team on a daily and continuous basis.

The postholder will take sole responsibility in the professional and safe leading the Cardiac Stress sessions within the Nuclear Medicine Department. This will also involve the direct supervision of junior colleagues during the session. The Advanced Practitioner role will include the supervision and responsibility for the safe and correct dosage and administration of pharmacological stress agents such as Adenosine. The post will also facilitate an in-depth knowledge of the ECG to recognise and act upon any changes which may be detrimental to patient safety without supervision. There will be a requisite for a detailed knowledge of drug interactions and possible adverse effects associated with the procedure.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300. Walsall Manor houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The postholder will process complex Medicine data using software for both quantitative and qualitative analysis, recognising pitfalls and artefacts which may lead to processing and reporting errors.

The postholder will ensure that Health and Safety legislation is adhered to throughout the Nuclear Medicine and Imaging Department, thus providing a safe environment for staff, patients, visitors and other service users.

The postholder will formulate, maintain, review and audit documentation regarding risk assessments, COSHH assessments, fire safety and DSE assessments. They will also liaise with Governance and Health and Safety Leads to provide safe and well-led service within Imaging.

The postholder will formulate and review business continuity and contingency planning for unforeseen events within the Nuclear Medicine Department. Contingency plans will be rehearsed with the Nuclear Medicine Team and documented for inspection as required by Local Rules.

The postholder will be responsible for the management of risk within the workplace. This will include physical risks and risks regarding data and health and wellbeing of employees.

The postholder will continually audit compliance and annual update of Local Rules as required in conjunction with Medical Physics Expert (MPE) and Ionizing Radiation Regulations 2017. This will include compilation and continuous review of patient information leaflets to obtain consent, authorisation guidelines for referrers and clinical protocols for imaging.

The postholder will supply specialist information on behalf of the Trust to external Regulatory Authorities regarding Trust compliance with regard to consents and permits.

The postholder will demonstrate specialist knowledge and skills to apply for Employer License on behalf of the Trust and ARSAC licenses on behalf of Physicians as required.

The postholder will have the knowledge and skills to attend and provide a detailed report required for a formal interview with the Environment Agency Inspector or CQC, HSE inspector as required.

The postholder will submit annual waste disposal figures to the Radioactive Waste Advisor (RWA) for submission to the Environment Agency on behalf of the Trust on an annual basis.

The postholder will formulate correspondence and organisation of contracts and service level agreements for equipment required within the Nuclear Medicine Department.
