An exciting new opportunity has arisen to work in the Walsall Healthcare Trust's imaging service. The Advanced Practitioner Sonographer will perform ultrasound scans at a level exceeding those found at enhanced practitioner level, encompassing more specialised examinations such as full Musculo-skeletal, full paediatrics, full vascular or advanced procedures such as contrast enhanced ultrasound. The post holder will work autonomously within the specialist area, producing high-quality independent examination reports that inform the diagnostic and treatment pathways, whilst also contributing to the general ultrasound rota in other areas such as in-patient and general GP/out‑patient ultrasound.

The post holder will act as training and development lead for ultrasound, co‑ordinating training for sonographers and managing the CPD activities provided by the department. Whilst concentrating on clinical duties and training & development, the post-holder would be expected to work within the 4 pillars of advanced practice, encompassing clinical leadership, training, leading regular audits, ensuring adherence to national standards, and contributing to clinical governance, risk management, and research initiatives to continuously improve service quality and patient outcomes.

The successful candidate will deliver high-quality advanced work in ultrasound, whilst working closely with the superintendent Sonographer and consultant sonographers to develop the service. The role will be approximately 80% clinical and 20% non‑clinical, although this is flexible depending on the demands of the service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain high levels of specialist expertise in General & Advanced Ultrasound, applying advanced professional skills in practice.
  • Perform specialised ultrasound scans beyond those found in enhanced practice sonography, such as Musculo-skeletal, paediatric, vascular or head and neck.
  • Hold, or develop own skills in advanced ultrasound procedures, such as Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound.
  • Exercise a high degree of professional and personal autonomy, demonstrating advanced clinical competence, decision making and a knowledge base beyond those associated with conventional Enhanced Practitioner Sonographer roles.
  • Drive forward the boundaries of own practice and that of advanced practitioners.
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe, and patient-centred General Ultrasound services.
  • Lead and support the development of new clinical pathways and service improvements and advanced practice in Ultrasound.
  • Ensure all guidelines, policies, and procedures are adhered to in General Ultrasound and are updated in line with legislative guidance and best practice.
  • Act as a clinical expert, advising on complex cases and liaising with multidisciplinary teams for optimal patient care.
  • Attend multidisciplinary meetings to discuss cases as appropriate, imparting complex information and advising on patient diagnosis.
  • Work collaboratively with the Radiology Services Manager, superintendent sonographer and Consultant Sonographers and other modality leads to ensure effective integration and communication within the Imaging Department.
  • Attend and contribute to Imaging Quality and Performance meetings, ensuring that the ultrasound service aligns with the Quality Standard for Imaging (QSI) and other relevant guidelines.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Extensive experience in advanced ultrasound practice, including proficiency in musculoskeletal, paediatric, vascular and contrast‑enhanced techniques.
  • Strong clinical leadership, audit and CPD coordination.
  • Ability to work independently and develop new clinical pathways.
