Due to internal promotion, we have an exciting opportunity to recruit a Qualified Dispenser or Trainee Dispenser to join our dedicated team at Wallingbrook Health Group. Own transport essential and applicants must have a full, clean driving licence. Applicants must be flexible and able to cover when required.

General practice is a very fast-paced environment; the successful candidate must be able to work under pressure, remain calm, have excellent communication skills, pay strong attention to detail and accuracy, and have the ability to work well within a team to serve a patient list size of over 7650 patients.

Candidates must be able to deal with the public in a professional and approachable manner. They would be required to:

  • Process repeat prescription requests
  • Deal with enquiries both face-to-face and over the telephone
  • Dispense medication
  • Order stock
  • Take payments
  • Perform other administrative duties

Main duties of the job include:

  • Ensuring all medicines and appliances are checked against the prescription.
  • Ensuring that all monies received or handled on behalf of the practice are appropriately stored and banked, and a record kept of all financial transactions.
  • Notifying the authorising doctor of any FP10 returns/feedback from the PS so that any appropriate remedial action may be taken.
  • Operating efficient stock control appropriate to the needs of the practice, ensuring continuity of supply for patients and minimising wastage through out of date stock.
  • Ensuring stock rotation method is used and out of date items are removed from stock.
  • Ensuring that drugs are stored in an appropriate manner in accordance with the accompanying instructions.
  • Disposing of returned unused medicines.
  • Providing a delivery service to our local branch surgeries, post office and housebound patients.
  • Ensuring shelves and all work surfaces are regularly cleaned to maintain a high level of hygiene within the dispensary and that all dispensary equipment is kept clean and is in good working order.
  • Taking prompt action in response to any drug alert bulletins that may be received from time to time.
  • Maintaining full and accurate records of all dispensing transactions, incorporating the use of computers when available and appropriate.

About us: Wallingbrook is situated in the town of Chulmleigh in purpose-built premises. The Practice also has a branch surgery which is open every day in the village of Winkleigh. The practice serves a population of over 7650 patients in a rural area covering approximately 100 square miles. The practice holds a Personal Medical Services (PMS) contract providing primary care and dispensing services to its population.

We are a close-knit team in a rural area led by a partnership of GPs and a Managing Partner. We are proud of our Practice and share a sense of vocation, working to the best of our ability to improve the health of the community and giving priority to those with the greatest clinical needs. We are all committed to maintaining up-to-date knowledge and skills and working within the boundaries of our competence. We aim to provide evidence-based care and work collaboratively with colleagues within our team, our attached community team and secondary care providers.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring that all medicines and appliances dispensed are checked against the prescription and whenever there is doubt about the appropriateness of the item, or about the dose or labelling instructions to check with the authorising prescriber.
  • Collecting all due prescription charges and ensuring that the patient declaration on the reverse of the FP10 is duly filled in and signed by the patient.
  • Endorsing all prescription forms as appropriate, collating and forwarding the forms in a secure manner to the NHS Prescription Services for processing and reimbursement.
  • Promptly forwarding all invoices and dispensary related correspondence to the Managing Partner or Finance Administrator according to practice policy.
  • Operating efficient stock control appropriate to the needs of the practice, ensuring continuity of supply for patients and minimising wastage through out of date stock.
  • Ensuring that drugs are stored in an appropriate manner in accordance with the accompanying instructions.
  • Providing a delivery service to our local branch surgeries, post office and housebound patients.
  • Ensuring the work areas remain tidy.
  • Taking prompt action in response to any drug alert bulletins that may be received from time to time.
  • Maintaining full and accurate records of all dispensing transactions, incorporating the use of computers when available and appropriate.

Other: Assist with training of Trainee Dispensers.

Person Specification:

  • Skills: Excellent communication skills (Written and Oral), Strong IT skills, High level of organisational skills and effective time management, Ability to work accurately in a fast-paced environment, Ability to work within an environment where confidentiality is paramount, Committed to patient care and able to empathise with a wide variety of patients, Ability to work without direct supervision and determine own workload priorities, The ability to follow procedures and work to deadlines, Problem-solving skills, Interpersonal skills, Willingness to develop and learn new skills, Ability to effectively manage stock, including ordering, rotation, disposal etc.
  • Qualifications: Good standard of education to GCSE standard or equivalent, Familiar with Microsoft Office applications, NVQ 2 in Dispensing or equivalent.
  • Experience: Practical experience of working with others, Experience of using own initiative, Experience of customer service, Practical experience of liaising with other health care professionals, Experience of working within a Dispensary Environment, Practical experience of SystmOne computerised system.

Transport: Candidates must have their own transport and a full, clean driving licence.
