JOB DESCRIPTION: As a Metallurgical Engineer, you will join a growing team that provides metallurgical services to global customers. Our team specialises in metal quality assessment with the capability to conduct plant process reviews, benchmark customer metal quality and to provide technical services along with material and customer product analysis. The key function of the Metallurgical Engineer is to support our global technical sales teams by providing metallurgical analysis techniques across multiple support needs. In addition, the Metallurgical Engineer will provide support to internal R&D and manufacturing facilities. Your role will encompass a spectrum of metallurgical duties, from practical hands-on work through to taking control of deliverables with occasional UK and international travel to visit customer plants.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Help the team and support the key objectives set by the Metallurgical Manager
- Enjoy both the scale and variety of exciting projects which can change daily
- Cut, mount, polish and analyse customer issued PoDFA samples (20% of role)
- Re-melt customer metal samples, process through the internal PoDFA equipment, cut, mount, polish and analyse the PoDFA samples (40% of role)
- Provide high quality metallurgical analysis and reports for our global internal and external customers (40% of role)
- Design, coordinate, conduct and report on melt cleanliness trials at highly strategic customer sites to demonstrate aluminium process improvements, as appropriate
- Provide metallurgical services to help support internal R&D activities
PERSON SPECIFICATION: As a Metallurgical Engineer, you will already have direct familiarity of at least one material/alloy system, supported by a relevant degree, apprenticeship, or technical pedigree. Other skills and experience we are seeking include:
- Materials analytical skills
- Metallographic preparation and associated light microscopy
- Excellent optical and scanning electron microscopy skills (SEM/EDS/EDX)
- Knowledge of metal cleanliness assessment techniques including PoDFA, Prefil and LiMCA
- The ability and experience to perform Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA)
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to deliver technical services
