Overview of role

The Quality Assurance (QA) team plays a critical oversight function within the Firm's Compliance department. Their role is to independently assess the client vetting processes in the Business Acceptance and Regulatory Monitoring & Investigations (RM&I) teams and identify individual and systemic trends. The team takes a partnership approach to the Compliance department and is responsible for coaching the Analysts, maintaining relationships with external vendors and enhancing overall quality scores through targeted training.
The Quality Assurance Specialist (known internally as the QA SME) will act as the technical lead and knowledge owner for the Firm's newly established QA function. They will bring deep expertise in regulatory expectations, quality frameworks, and assurance methodologies relevant to law firms and the professional services sector. The primary purpose of the role is to assist with designing and embedding the QA framework, build competency and expertise within the QA team, contribute to driving a "quality culture", and provide expert insight to the Compliance leadership team. The role acts as a hands-on specialist and is crucial in ensuring the Business Acceptance and RM&I teams meet high standards of accuracy, consistency, and alignment with global regulatory requirements. Please be advised this role requires you to be in the office for 50% of the time.
Duties, Responsibilities & Person Specification
- Act as the subject matter expert on relevant regulatory requirements, e.g., AML, sanctions regimes, etc.
- Establish QA standards, scoring criteria, and review templates to ensure consistent assessments across teams.
- Develop procedures, documentation, and workflows to support QA operations.
- Train, mentor, and coach the QA team to build technical QA capability.
- Develop and deliver structured training programmes on QA methodology, regulatory standards, and review techniques.
- Work with the Senior Quality Assurance Manager to recommend QA processes, systems, and controls, and support with implementing these.
- Contribute to driving a continuous improvement, learning and quality culture within QA, Business Acceptance, and RM&I teams.
- Conduct complex, high-risk or escalated QA reviews.
- Calibrate review assessments across reviewers to ensure consistency and accuracy, eventually training others in calibration techniques.
- Identify error trends, process gaps or thematic issues and recommend remediations.
- Work closely with the relevant teams to explain QA findings and provide guidance on remediation, eventually training senior members of the QA team.
- Champion a "quality culture" through commitment to the team's development to highly competent QA professionals; driving a best-in-class service and providing regular and constructive feedback.
- Ensure QA activities remain aligned with emerging regulatory expectations and best practice.
Education, Skills & Experience
- Significant experience in QA within a compliance, risk, or regulatory function, preferably in legal, professional, or financial services.
- Deep knowledge of AML, KYC sanctions, CDD/EDD and related regulatory frameworks across multiple jurisdictions.
- Demonstrable experience designing QA methodologies, frameworks, or review processes.
- Proven ability to train, mentor, coach and build capability and performance within a new and developing team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a structured, methodical approach.
- Highly organised with a strong ability to prioritise effectively.
- Analytical mindset with attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven track record of building collaborative working relationships across a business.
- Ability to simplify complex regulatory issues to a non-technical audience.
