Walker Group provides advanced high-precision manufacturing services from centres of excellence located in the UK and Poland. We are seeking a Buyer to join our team in Glasgow.

As a Buyer, you’ll be responsible for all aspects of goods and services procurement and performance to enable achievement of productivity and OTD targets, from tendering and negotiation through to buying, quality, cost and delivery controls. Continuous improvement of systems and procedures to ensure optimum use of all resources and highest performance results.

Buyer Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide analysis on new/existing costs & review cost reduction activities/strategies including risk review and qualification activities.
  • Ensure budget details are available prior to purchase, negotiate cost reductions and update the savings tracker.
  • Support business to decrease production downtime due to materials availability.
  • Source product, plan activity, raise and expedite purchase orders which support fulfilment of production schedules and client requirements within the tendered budget.
  • Develop and manage strong supplier/business relationship and performance.
  • Manage system demand requirements, generate forecast reports and manage supplier capacity.
  • Manage transport activities/logistics and customs between sites.
  • Provide raw material and component status reports, determining and expediting the appropriate actions.
  • Evaluate, drive and solve resolution issues on material, technical, quality, price, delivery and invoices.
  • Support all WPE sites with purchasing and expediting activities as required.
Buyer Skills & Behaviours:
  • Stays current and up-to-date on any changes that may affect the purchasing activities, products, materials etc and advise others on any impact as required.
  • Able to build and maintain consistent, effective & productive relationships with all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Liaises and works proactively, collaboratively and effectively with other stakeholders (NPI, Quotes, bids, etc.)
  • Good communication, negotiation, interpersonal and influencing skills.
  • Focused self-starter, target driven with a 'can do' attitude and ability to motivate others.
  • Able to work methodically & contribute as part of a strong team.
  • Commercially and financially aware with strong negotiation skills, analytical, IT and problem-solving skills and excellent attention to detail.
  • Can work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Able to plan and organise work, manage time effectively, prioritise tasks and achieve targets.
Buyer Qualifications & Experience:
  • Professional member of CIPS or MCIPS Diploma or Master’s level, or similar purchasing qualification.
  • Degree qualified. Business, manufacturing or finance preferred.
  • Experience in either raw materials, workshop/machining/tool room or technical Account Management experience in engineering sector or similar.
  • Strong understanding of engineering manufacturing and purchasing/supply chain.
  • Good knowledge of purchasing, negotiation, commercial understanding and cost breakdown.
  • Experience of working closely with and developing supplier relationships.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Lean techniques including 5S would be advantageous.
  • Good understanding of Customer service and OTD and its impact to the business and customer order fulfilment.
