Who are we?

We are a gas distribution business that services the gas infrastructure across Wales and the south‑west of England.

We serve our customers and communities with safe, reliable, and affordable energy services whilst investing to create a sustainable future to deliver our carbon‑free vision for 2050.

What we’re looking for?

We’re looking for a Security Engineer to join our Cyber Resilience team to deliver hands‑on cyber security services ensuring the effective operation and continuous improvement of enterprise‑wide Security Operations capabilities, including threat monitoring, vulnerability management, security engineering, identity and access management, security assurance, and cyber resilience activities across IT, cloud and OT (Desirable) environments.

We’ll trust you to

  • Work with the Cyber Security Team to enhance the organisation's threat monitoring, detection, and incident response capabilities.
  • Own the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the cyber security estate, covering user, infrastructure, cloud, application, and OT assets.
  • Consult on, administer, and secure Microsoft Entra ID, including Conditional Access, Identity Protection, and Privileged Access Management (PAM), ensuring effective identity and access management controls are implemented and maintained.
  • Act as the SME and trusted advisor for security technologies and products, representing Cyber Technology at governance boards and key stakeholder forums.

You can read a full job description here.

You’ll need to have

  • Deep, hands‑on experience with the Microsoft Defender Suite (Defender for Endpoint, Defender for Identity, and Defender for Cloud), alongside Microsoft Purview for information protection and Microsoft Sentinel for SIEM and SOC capabilities.
  • Strong knowledge and experience of establishing secure, well‑governed Azure environments, implementing baseline policies, controls, and governance structures.
  • Strong technical knowledge of Azure services and architecture, including networking, identity, storage, and compute, and how security controls are applied across them.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills, with the ability to break down complex problems, identify root causes, and determine risk‑proportionate solutions.
  • Able to adapt quickly to the evolving cyber threat landscape, maintaining awareness of emerging risks, technologies, and industry developments.

As we are a safety critical organisation, all offers of employment are subject to pre‑employment drug & alcohol screening.

Due to the enhanced safety critical nature of this role, you will also be required to carry out a National Security Vetting Security Clearance check - this will be carried out by United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV).

You can find out more details of the process on the Government website here:

We would also love to hear about anything else you feel you could add or bring to the role!

  • A competitive salary starting at £62,160 rising to £71,484
  • Flexible working opportunities
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays which can be tailored to celebrations that reflect your beliefs
  • Retirement Savings Plan (pension) with Aviva: 5% employee contribution, with WWU doubling your contribution at 10% - totalling 15%
