Job overview

This is a post for a Specialty Registrar in the Gastroenterology Department within the Surgical Care Collaborative in North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust. The post-holder will undertake specific duties as part of the development of a multi-disciplinary team approach to care within the specialty and have access to endoscopy upper and lower GI training.

The appointee will work across the two main NCIC hospital sites, Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle and West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven supporting inpatient and outpatient care, including the delivery of Endoscopy services for the local population.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join our team of consultants, specialty doctors and specialty registrars to provide an integrated digestive diseases service across North Cumbria. Associated with the transformation of all our services across the Trust, and in conjunction with the introduction of our model for acute medical care, it is envisaged that future configurations will focus complex inpatient work at the Carlisle site, and elective outpatient services (endoscopy and outpatient clinics) will be provided by all of the team across the Trust. The department has a dedicated GI ward within the Cumberland Infirmary at Carlisle for the treatment of inpatients. There is a dedicated 3-room endoscopy unit at the Cumberland Infirmary and the endoscopy unit at West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven has 2 dedicated rooms in a new, state of the art facility. The successful candidate will join a team of gastroenterologists supported by nurse specialists across North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust. Sub specialty interest will be encouraged where this contributes to and complements the department and Trusts’ service needs. While appointees will be appointed to a base unit, all members of the team will be expected to contribute to all aspects of the general gastroenterology service across the Trust.

We have access to a medical day procedures unit that undertakes, for example, biologic treatments, ascitic drainage, liver biopsy and transfusions.

The North Cumbria GI Service is a cohesive and integrated department, combining the services gastroenterology and endoscopy, upper gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, colorectal, emergency GI surgery.

The service provides complete care for patients with disorders relating to the gastrointestinal tract. Surgeons, physicians, specialist nurses and allied health professions work closely together to provide in house multidisciplinary care for all patients with gastrointestinal problems in the emergency, elective, inpatient and outpatient setting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will be job planned to work alongside senior colleagues to support the delivery of inpatient, outpatient and endoscopy services at North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust. They will be expected to work independently within a ward setting, managing a group of patients and providing support for doctors in training as well as working closely with other teams such as dietetics, Physicians Associates, Doctors Assistants and Specialist Nurses.

The post holder will support both general Gastroenterology Clinics and also sub-specialty clinics, including IBD and Hepatology, and will have the opportunity to manage their own clinics alongside a consultant clinic to gain independent experience.

The post holder will also have the opportunity to undertake endoscopy lists, with training in both Gastroscopies, Colonoscopies and Flexible Sigmoidoscopies being provided in house by our training endoscopy leads.

It would also be expected that the post holder undertake audit and governance work to develop their own practice as well as driving forward service improvements within the department.
